I posted this on another thread, but just realized this is where I should ask.

My daughter found this baby boy last Sunday evening laying in the middle of the sidewalk at a park. Was so glad to find this board to know what to do! He was cold and lethargic but we warmed him and then rehydrated for about 18 hours with pedialyte from a 1 cc syringe until he was peeing regularly. We then started Esbilac. I bought the cans of liquid before reading we should get the powder and also ordered Fox Valley 20/50 but it won’t arrive until Tuesday. He seemed to do well for a couple of days although his stools got pretty loose.

Has had steady weight gain since I started weighing him Thursday night- 19.5 g, 20.6 g, 21.4 g this AM.

Yesterday he had loose stools all day, so I added a bit of plain yogurt to his formula and mixed well. I am giving about 1 cc every 2 hours although sometimes he loses interest about .8 cc in so I don’t push it. He ate the formula with the yogurt right up for two feeding. But then did not poop from yesterday evening until this morning which I thought was good after all the loose stool. Was still peeing well. This morning his belly was definitely full and not alarmingly tight, but somewhat hard. I could see a little blob of white in the upper left quadrant of his belly. But him in warm water and massaged his belly and air and soft yellow stool definitely made his belly softer, although I still see white in his belly though it is smaller. Gave plain water last two feedings today. No more poop. Should I keep doing the warm water baths/tummy massages? Switch to the homemade goat milk formula?

We have his box set up half on a heating pad and he is definitely more active. Although I’m definitely worried about the belly issues!

I’m trying to upload pictures and will post them as soon as I figure it out.

Thanks all!

Welcome to TheSquirrelBoard RoadTrip

I think I would switch to either the homemade goat milk temporary formula or I would go buy powdered puppy Esbilac. Actually the goat milk recipe would be cheaper until your FV 20:50 arrives on Tuesday.
I wouldn’t be comfortable keeping him on the canned Esbilac until Tuesday. The liquid canned Esbilac does cause diarrhea. Because he is so small, 4 days is too long to wait. When they first come into rehab, those first few days are critical so they need to be stabilized pretty soon or they will go downhill fast.

Post #1 on this thread gives the recipe for the temporary goat milk recipe.

This is a very helpful link about baby squirrel care. It is 6 pages long. Henry’s sells many of the supplies you need. I would highly recommend that you buy a Miracle Nipple and O-ring syringes. They are helpful in preventing aspiration. Aspiration of formula causes pneumonia. You want to avoid that.

Thanks so much! Read that earlier this week and it was super helpful. Already bought the miracle nipple. I’ll go buy some goat milk now to make the homemade formula. Hopefully that helps!

I would definitely change away from liquid to powdered Esbilac asap...
