View Full Version : Cory and Trevor still have stool issues

We had an issue with the babies not digesting the FV formula and started to see bloat. Got the bloat to go away and switched back to esbilac goats milk, (regular esbilac will be here tomorrow). This was 8 days ago. We have had poop issues since. 7 days ago after their 10 hour water only feedings, they pooped wonderfully. And a whole lot it seemed. Poop seemed healthy and firm, yellow-gold in color. Well, that’s been the last time we’ve had a stool of that consistency. Cory had the bloat the worst, and has only had one decent stool in between this time. That was only when I ran him under warm water and massaged his belly. Now he hardly outputs anything and if he does it’s black and watery. Trevor had a few stools the same way, but now seems to be firming up. My main concern is Trevor poops after almost every feeding, but Cory does not. And it constantly worries me. Does this sound like a digestion issue? Or could this be something going on bacterial wise??

They both eat roughly about the same amount, 2-2.3 ccs every 3-4 hours. Mixing formula 1 part to 2 parts water. Make it then use it for the next 4-5 feedings.

AND to add some more drama Into the mix, Trevor is sucking on Cory and now we are monitoring Cory’s private parts closely. They have been separated now. He is forming a scab and I soaked it and peeling off what I could last night cause he would only produce a drop or two of urine. But it formed back already and the same thing today, a few drops only before feeding and one drop after feeding. Ugh 😑

I just read back on your other forum, these babies are 5 weeks and that's all they are eating?
What are their weights now?

Suckling is often due from hunger. You do need to keep the scab soaked and taken
off and apply an ab. Being suckled can cause uti's.

Appears they have had a few formula changes from the start,
no doubt their gut flora is out of whack.

They are estimated to be almost 4 weeks at the moment. They are only weight 40-43 g. But continue to gain weight daily. They have had about two feedings of KMR over two weeks ago when we first got them cause that was the only thing available to purchase atm. Then they were switched to Esbilac goats milk, then about 10 days switched to FoxValley(before I found this forum). Was fed FV for 5 days and then sought out help from here, and then did water treatment for the bloat, then back on esbilac. So only two different formulas really.

Really?? :thinking
So what is the Esbilac your feeding now, did you go back to Goat's milk?

Yes. It’s what we had and I have enough left for a couple more feedings. I ordered regular esbilac and it arrives tomorrow.

Unless, you recommend stay with goats milk and transition to the FV 25/50 in a week or so?

Well, things sure can change quickly with these little guys. I’ve attached some photos. I just fed them and here’s an update. Cory has no produce IMO a beautiful stool, maybe a little softer than I’d like, but hey it’s progress. I also just got him to tinkle quite a bit and his tummy immediately got smaller. His penis is not red and swollen anymore. But does have a small scab that doesn’t seem to be affecting his urination. Now, Trevor, who hasn’t given us much issues, just produced a pretty black, watery stool. Looks like to me diarrhea. But it was voluntary. He has never had an issue with urinating, other than we can’t keep up with his bladder and ends up peeing all over us/floor. 😅 they have got all their furs and tail is coming in nice and fluffy. I sure hope their tummy problems pass soon.

Should I stick with goats milk until eyes are open, or start with the regular esbilac, OR transition to the FV 20?

First, and second picture are Trevor. Third, fourth, fifth, and sixth pictures are Cory. Seventh is Trevor’s stool just now.

Those babies look very skinny to me. Are you keeping a record of how much each one takes at a feeding and whether they pee and poop, and the consistency of the poop? It’s very helpful to do this so you can see if there’s a pattern with loose stool, eating amounts, etc.

Have they acted like they want more formula at a feeding? If and when they do you can allow them to have more so long as you go very slowly with increases.

I don’t know what others recommendation about the Esbilac goats milk. I’ve never used it. I’m a little concerned about the stool being black. Maybe it has to do with the formula you’re feeding. I always thought that formula made the stool golden color. I hope others that have used the Esbilac goats milk will say if this is something they’ve noticed.

I know you think that because it’s only been two different types of formula it’s not much change, but it is for these little guys. At this point you don’t know how they’ll react to the Esbilac, but you do know that they didn’t tolerate the FV, right? If that’s the case then I don’t think it would be a good idea to put them back on the FV.

When the Esbilac comes you want to transition them slowly to it. Mix both formulas separately, one part formula, two parts water. Then fill your syringe with 75% goats milk Esbilac and 25% Esbilac. Feed them that combination for several feedings, then go to 50/50 for several feedings and then 25% goats milk and 75% Esbilac for several feedings and then 100% Esbilac. This should be over the course of a few days. Hopefully their stomachs will accept the change without more diarrhea. You can also add a small amount of infant rice cereal to their formula to see if that will help firm the stool. Remember to offer water BETWEEN scheduled feedings if they have loose stool.

Make sure the suckled penis continues to be able to urinate.

I explained in previous replies to this thread. They eat 5% of their body weight. They are weighed every day in grams. Trevor weighs 41 and Cory weighs 43. I do not feed them more than the 5%. I feed them slowly so their brains reckoning they are full and they almost instantly go back to sleep in my hand while I am stimulating them.

I will offer Trevor some water in between feedings if that is the best thing to do.

How frequently are they being fed? (I Looked through here several times and did not see...). It may be I am the only one, but anytime I have underweight babies I continue to provide at least 1 overnight feeding until I am satisfied they are on the right track.

(This information was at the bottom, of my initial thread post. I try to give as much information at once to get quick responses) They are eating every 3 hours during the day and late night. Stretches between 3-5 hours during dinner time due to my job. And I typically give them a late night/early morning feeding after work. Last night they ate around 3 am. I am up feeding them now. Reweighed then, one is 47 the other is 45. I put 2.5 ccs in both of their syringes.

Also, how much water should I be giving inbetween Feedings???

Since we had an issue with Trevor suckaling on Cory, could he be consuming Cory’s urine and that could cause the diarrhea?????
