Can anyone tell me if you have any ideas on how to get rid of rats when you have witnessed squirrels sneaking in the same room of a building? This old historical building has so many nooks and crannies and I'm desperate. Because I have employees here I have to do something and soon. Perfectly sealing it up is an impossible venture. I'm certain of that.

If it has openings, squirrels, rats, mice, birds etc will probably try to take advantage looking for food and shelter. You can try live traps (release squirrels and relocate rats) but that has risks and limitations.
You can seal up some of holes and make it more difficult to get in.

It's an old 1923 wood frame building with way more issues than I could begin to explain in that one west room. The two rooms I use are in quite good shape considering. However, they can get in the ceiling and cross over which is what they're doing. If we weren't here but another 1-2 years I would consider just tearing that part down in the near future but in all honesty I can't afford that kind of project right now. The only thing I have came up with myself is to bait after dark and remove before dawn. I hadn't considered live traps because I wouldn't know what to do with the rats =(

You can release the rats a mile or more away from your building. Some might not survive, some might but you don't want rats (or squirrels) inside your building. Poison will kill squirrels too.

How about sonic rodent chasers. You don't want squirrels in there either.

No, I'd prefer not to have squirrels in there either but I don't fear diseases with them and would accept it. Do you have a link I could look up for exactly what you mean? I don't want it to disturb the squirrels outside so I'm curious about distance. I have at least one mama nesting in the tree beside the shop.
Let me correct and say I prefer not to have wild squirrels in there. :grin3 Several babies have gone to work with me and I even have a cat tree for them in the shop.

I put a Ratinator trap in my Amazon cart for now. I am going to have to do some serious brainstorming on where to release though. I can't think of anywhere in a 10+ mile radius that I could release them and they wouldn't be in someone else's house by night fall.

Some of the devices vibrate through the ground (you have to pound them into the ground). Others put in attics emit high pitched sounds. I don't know the range or where to get them, but I would start on AMazon.

I have been on a quest to eradicate rats that live outside and around my house. It has been a job that has taken well over a year and I have caught and relocated approximately 25 rats of various sizes. We set multiple hav-a-heart traps and baited them with cheese and fruit, things that were not a wild squirrels first choice as a food source. I am in the south were food sources are available all year long, so the foods I used might be desireable to a squirrel in the winter elsewhere.
We set the traps at dusk, when rats are active but the squees have gone to bed and check them in the morning. At that time you can trip them so no squirrels go in and reset at nightfall. It takes a lot of work, but I am completely opposed to poison and sticky traps because they are indiscriminate killers. If a squirrel should accidentally get trapped (we had it happen a few times) they can be released and hopefully it is a learning experience. The smaller hav-a-heart traps that work for mice are too small I think for rats, but may work for baby rats or mice and I think they’re too small for a squirrel to get caught in.
We relocate all rats a minimum of a mile away, but usually about 2-3 miles away. Any nature park or areas where there are trees and underbrush will work. Diligence is the key to success eradicating rats. They are smart, sneaky and tenacious!
