I'd like to give my Southern Flyer Vitamin D so that he can absorb the Calcium I give him. Somehow, giving him milk or cheese seems really weird, though he gets a little yogurt once in awhile.
What are good food sources of Vitamin D?
Also, I sprinkle calcium powder on his food daily. Is that too much? I only use a pinch. Should I cut it back to a couple of times a week?
He lives inside and gets very little natural sunlight unfortunately.
Thanks.

i'm not certain about food sources, but i would encourage you to have him get some sun anyway. sunlight is a wonderful thing for every animal.

think about getting him a cage that you can take outside. if you're worried he'll escape, a chicken-wire (mesh) cage that's double wired should be plenty to hold him in.

:Welcome I don't have experience with flyers, but remembered that this has been discussed before -- check this thread http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5458&highlight=flyer+vitamin

In particular (Post #27 of that thread):

Hi again. Flyers, being nocturnal, do not use sunlight. They get vitamin D (to utilize the calcium) from their diet in the wild. For our pets, most of us use a liquid vitamin for mammals. I, and many others, use L&M Farms Liquid Vitamins. They package it for guinea pigs, ferrets, rats, hamsters, etc, but the only thing different about them is the dosage. I use 1 drop per ounce of water, but when dealing with a case of MBD you will probably want to use a higher dose until she is better.

A cuttlebone is a good idea - I keep one in all my flyer's cages. And feed plenty of foods that are high in calcium.

I would advise you to go to the National Flying Squirrel Association for more information. They specialize in flyers, and there is already a lot of information about MBD there, and many other friendly people, just like here, willing to help.....

Hope this is helpful! :)
