I’ve never released a singleton, except the re-release of May and she was about 8 months old at the time.
I have a male that is about 16 weeks old. How old should he be before I put him in the RC? The RC is 4x8x6 so he can stay in there for awhile. We have had two cool spells with temps in the low 50’s at night, warming to the 60’s-70’s during the day. It only lasts for a couple of days then temps go back up to the upper 70’s low 80’s. I worry because he has no one to snuggle with, but will have a cube and nest box in the RC.
I don’t think there will be a problem releasing him the end of December or early January. Although we can get a very cold snap upper (30’s-low 40’s) in January it rarely lasts more than a few days. Because I’m along the coast we rarely get freezing temperatures and if we do it’s usually only once in late January or early February.
Our oak tree still has leaves. I provide avocado, coconut, corn and boo balls for all the wilds throughout winter. He will have a familiar nest box in the oak tree when he’s released and access to the RC indefinitely.
So the questions are: How old should he be to go to the RC? Would it be better to keep him inside longer or in the RC longer? Does anyone see a problem with him being released in January even though he’s a singleton?
