Hi all,

I've had a female grey squirrel for about 4 years now and over the last few days she has started developing bald patches and has gotten some scrapes. I've cleaned the scrapes with warm water but as I've been reading the forums I keep seeing silvadene mentioned as a topical ointment. Is there something equivalent to this that I could get from a local Walgreens, CVS, etc... that will produce the same results as silvadene? She is eating and very active.

Nope, but you can order it - this is the only place I have found that sells without a prescription: https://www.mountainside-medical.com/pages/search-results-page?q=silver+sulfadiazine+cream

I get the little $16.96 jar when I get it - it will last a LONG time.

What is happening with your squirrel? How is she getting hurt?

You need to figure out what's causing it and address the issue. It's good to treat symptoms, but you have to treat the root issue.

What is her diet?

Her diet consists of 2 Picky blocks a day along with fresh carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, and the occasional tomato, squash, etc... thrown in. We were giving her a peanut every night as a treat but have since stopped that. She has a small scrape on her side but a more serious looking one around the base of her tail. I've been cleaning it often and putting a small amount of neosporin on it. It almost looks like she got her tail caught in something but its so weird that its right at the base. I've been keeping a very close eye on her and she has been spending a little more time in her cage till this clears up.

I'm not sure what to do about the patches of fur missing. She is still very active and alert and not showing any indications of pain. I can hold her and clean the wound with no issues. Thank you very much for the replies I greatly appreciate it!

You need to add Spring Mix (comes in the plastic container), sugar snap peas, Avocado and I give Almonds, Walnuts, Pecans and Hazel nuts in the shell 2 a day and one or 2 shelled pecans a day. Belgian Endive and Frisee if you can get it black oil sunflower seeds a few times a week

can you share some pixs?

I took in a new Summer baby last week and he was missing patches of fur and his fur was coarse and didn't feel healthy. I found out she was feeding fruits and nuts and that is it. I switched him to the foods I listed above, along with the blocks and the foods on your list. 8 days later his coat is glossy and the missing parts have a soft downy fuzz growing :D

Your diet needs some help and if the issue is related to that it will start getting better in a week.

Awesome, I will definitely start giving those foods more regularly. She loves avocados and sugar snap peas. I just got done cleaning and reapplying the neosporin so she is a little worked up but I will take some pics and post when she calms down.

I believe I've located the cause of the scrapes. It looks like she's created a hiding spot under the couch and I'm thinking she may have gotten scraped up under there. I've closed off her only methods of getting in and out.

Is it possible that fleas or mites could be causing the balding patches? She does seem to be scratching a little more than usual, if so, what are my best options for treating?

Thank you everyone for the comments, you've all been very helpful!

Revolution is the recommended treatment that will cover both fleas and mites.
It is Rx but can be purchased without script on line from Joe's pet meds -
http://www.joespetmeds.com/flea-control/revolution-cats-dogs.htm

It comes from Australia and may come in by the name Stronghold, it is Revolution.

Hi all, sorry for the delay in posting this. I've been super busy. Below is a picture of the bald patches. What are the dosing recommendations for Revolution?

hmmmmm, did you change laundry detergent? What are you using in her cage?

I just use a few drops (as in 2 - 3 drops) of Revolution

Did all the bald spots just appear together? Did the fur fall out and the spot get bigger gradually or did they go from furred to bald quickly?

They have gone from furred to bald fairly quickly, over 3 - 4 days. They don't seem to be getting worse but not much better either. Some of them are showing a little peach fuzz like hair is trying to come back now but its been very slow. We haven't changed laundry detergent, everything has been fairly calm and in our normal routine.

I see you’re in Florida. I have revolution I can share if needed. It takes a few weeks to get a delivery from Joes due to it being in Australia. A wonderful lady shared with me while I was waiting on my own as well. Just let me know.

Sorry I just saw you asked how much to use. Do you have the kitten/puppy up to 5lb strength?
