Hello All We rescued a baby squirrel when it was small enough to fit in the palm of your hand it's now 3 months or so old and very social with us my wife lets the squirrel out side to play in our backyard and keeps an eye on the squirrel this is going well up until yesterday when the squirrel fell out of a tree and appears to have broke his back we're not having any luck reaching out to any local vets because everyone is suggesting just to put him down euthanize him as you can imagine that option would be the very last option we would consider as he has become part of the family aside from his rear legs and tail appearing to be limp at all times he is eating he does seem to be in good spirit made it through the night I've read some things that squirrel tend to pass away within a day or two from breaking their back due to not being able to go pee which develops infections now our squirrel is still having bowel movements but we have not noticed whether he has peed or not we are here hoping for some advice maybe some connections and direction maybe a local squirrel Society in our area or rescue can help us we would love to keep our squirrel.

Get your hands on some prednisone as that will help with reduction of inflammation and help with healing. We have seen squirrels come back from symptoms as described. We will need a weight of your little guy and strength of the prednisone. Once we have that we can dose for you. Posting a picture will help us evaluate him.

Please tell us what formula you raised him on.

It's very true that urination can be affected by spinal injuries.

If there's a question at all as to whether or not he's peeing on his own, you can find videos on YouTube on how to "express a squirrel bladder" which is how you manually assist your squirrel to empty his bladder.

I had to do this with my Shelly, found her when she was about 8 months old and paralyzed from the hips down. Couldn't pee on her own at first so had to express her bladder for a couple of weeks. Then she seemed to be able to move the urine on her own.
