Hello all. Could this fire ant bite have gotten infected and become staph, I know that can happen on humans. I noticed one that was not healing correctly near her nose, I finally was touching it last evening and a lot of pus came out from under so I used a warm compress to get the scabby crusty part off and noticed just underneath it looked infected. I put Neosporin on it and while it looks better this morning I am wondering if they could be staph if so, now what? Appetite and digestion still normal. Thanks for all the advice.

I would use a dilute betadyne solution on this. Get a bottle of Betadyne (10% povidone iodine) at the drugstore (feel free to buy the generic). Mix about 20-25 drops to 1/4 cup water and saturate a cotton ball with it and use this to clean and saturate the area. Let it dry by itself. I would do the cleaning about 3 times a day. It doesn't burn or sting at all at this dilution and kills staph and other skin issues really fast. I wouldn't use any more of the neosporin since it is pretty close to the eyes and mouth and honestly, you won't need it with the betadyne cleanings.

Hello again. Been doing the Betadine for a bit over 24 hours. Guess it’s working because things look drier but there is still a little pus in areas. She’s such a little trooper, just hope I’m helping her out. I’ll post a pic from yesterday and now today. Does this look like progress? Thank you again, would be much harder doing this alone.

Hello all. Ok, I’m still very worried about little girl’s nose. I’ve been putting on the Betadine solution and things are dried out and crusty looking but still kind of pussy and raw looking underneath. I don’t want to pick at anything but I’m scared of it not draining. Here are some unpleasant pictures. Appetite is still good. Are oral antibiotics recommended at this point?

If this was my squirrel, I would start oral antibiotics. The nose and sinus area is a very sensitive area for squirrels, an infection in that location can become very dangerous. The question is, what antibiotics do you have on hand?

I am thinking along the lines of Doxy or Clavamox. I would continue to treat topically with the Betadyne (10% povidone iodine) solution that CM suggested.

I think that Clindamycin may be a good choice too.

If you have access to any antibiotics, let us know and we can provide specific directions for preparing the AB and exact dosing directions.

The only ones I have immediate access to are Cephalexin and amoxicillin, both 500mg.

Ok, just need a weight on the little guy. A kitchen scale in grams is what most people use. Weigh a tupperware container alone, then with him sitting in the container.

JMoe, I'm going to send dosing for the cephalexin.
We can start on that but we need to try to find Clindamycin or Clavamox.
This is very serious.

Just curious... the Amoxicillin that you have is JUST Amoxicillin, right?

It's not Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid is it?

Think it’s just Amox, can’t check until tomorrow. Thank you so much. It looks so bad, praying for this girl.

Here’s how to get Clindamycin without a prescription https://www.allivet.com/mobile/p-8015-fish-cin-clindamycin-150-mg-capsules.aspx?sku=50879-1&gclid=eaiaiqobchmi7jkb7sgg3giv0ikzch3j0ankeaqyasab eglyvpd_bwe

我总是遇到细菌性感染导致的皮肤病,通常我会使用碘伏消毒,然后使用这个药膏,2-3天松鼠可以完全康复,真的很不错

Hey guys. Just started Day 3 of antibiotics. Looks like things are getting hairier, in a good way. Hair returning to some affected spots. Also scabbier as opposed to just crusty—hopefully healing, not just oozing. Still not out of the woods but hopefully looking better. She has a tremendous appetite and moves around a lot.
First pic is two days ago, second pic is a few minutes ago.

Keep up the good work! I hope the AB can nip this infection in the bud!

Just a friendly reminder to wipe in a direction away from the eyes and minimize cross contamination with eyes (washing hands, keeping bedding changed frequently, etc.) Keep up the good work!

Hello all! We have some new hair growth where there ones were scabs. Her rhino horn scab on her nose is getting crustier and seems to keep getting pushed up higher, hopefully by new skin growing underneath. Great appetite and getting strong.

I love your baby. Would you share more pictures of her? Did you put her on an antibiotic?

She’s been on ABs since Wednesday. I have raised four, and of course loved them all, but she is pretty special because she was so tiny when I got her. I didn’t think she would survive especially because of the ant bites—In addition to the 10 foot fall from the nest to the roof, then the 10 foot drop from the roof to the ground, and she was cold when I found her. She’s such a tough girl.
Than you for all the support!
