Here’s the short version.... Found Sebastian 25 Sep. Warmed, hydrated etc...Located a small wound. Soaked him in a warm saline bath. Put erythromycin eye salve on wound. 2 days later he was oozing and smelling terribly. Found a vet that would see him.(It was a nightmare to find one that would EVEN talk to me). No rescues nearby. Doc put him on baytril 1/8 of a tablet 2 x a day. He started doing fabulous immediately. Smell went away, wound crusted over. I am still administering the baytril. Last night I noticed a squishy lump on his lowerish back. (He has never complained about it because his back legs are also paralyzed- now I know why). Figured abcess, can’t get in touch with vet. Realize it is anaerobe, and need differ AB. soaked his bottom half in saline earlier and continually did hot compresses. Patted him dry. Put a couple of drops of colloidal silver on wound.wrapped him up in a white clean bleached T-shirt and while snuggling it broke. Omg what a goopy mess. Like thick boogers. I am a Dental hygienist and have dealt with many oral abscesses but this was like nothing I have ever seen. I grabbed my loupes and sterile first aid and tried carefully to remove the pus. I did not get it all. I need advice as doc did not call me back. So worried about this boy. Thanks for listening and advising!!!💜🐿

What antibiotics do you have / can you get? We will advise if they are appropriate for this type of abscess.

Pictures are always a bug help.

I have macrobid 100 mg capsules and Clindamycin 300mg capsules. Will take a pic. It is dry a bit but if I saline soak it will still show pus. I was afraid to really get in there without advice. Thank you so much for replying to me. I would be lost without TSB 💜🐿

I would start the Clindamycin immediately.
Do you have a weight?

I don’t have weight. Was going out today to get scale but was afraid to leave him. I believe that he is an average sized 5-6 week old. I am sorrry that I can’t be more specific.

Can you post a pic next to a familiar item like a Coke can or something so that we can estimate the weight.

I want to thank you here at TSB for your quick response and dedication that you have for helping these babies and their caretakers. HRTS4SQRLS I really appreciate your help last night! So he has had 2 doses of the Clindamycin, and seems to be doing well. I did not want to risk him not making a full recovery and on your advice, was able to purchase a bottle of Clavamox. I have done some hot compresses and will be removing the remaining exudate here shortly. Vet did not know dosing for such a small baby. I told him that I was in good hands😊 Also do I stack any of these ABs that I have (baytril, Clindamycin). As far as flushing the site, I am unable to use the betadine as I have severe allergy. Is chlorhexadine a good alternative? And lastly... after I express the wound is there something I should put in to keep open? I looked for a Dermagel (read that on a forum here) can’t find it. Oh wait one more.. I read that baytril in the wound is good. I have pills. Crush them into a powder? I also have collided silver, coconut oil, neopsporin??
Wow that was a lot of questions! I would be lost without you guys.
HUGS AND SQUIRREL KISSES TO YOU! 😘🐿💜

Stacking the Clindamycin with the Clavamox is a great combo. I'll send dosing for the Clavamox in a PM. You can clean the wound with Chlorhexidine but I don't think I would flush with it. You can flush the wound with saline as long as the saline is sterile. I would not put Baytril in the wound. The two antibiotics that you're using are enough. If you want to use the Neosporin just to keep the wound moist that would be fine as you want it to heal from the inside out. The Neosporin itself won't be that much help but the ointment will help keep the wound from scabbing over.

HRTS4SQRLS I am frantic and so worried. So I soaked Sebastian’s bottom half in warm salt water until the outer crust broke off. Wow. It is bigger than I thought and the other wound also has an abscess underneath. I will send you pics. So they eventually started oozing a bit and then I began expressing. Nothing I have ever seen before and it scared me so I did not finish. It is so thick that I could actually cut it (I did not) looks a bit like adipose tissue. Any abcess that I have ever taken care of was more liquid or cheesy like. This is slimy. I don’t want to do the wrong thing. I don’t know if I can get the vet to even see him. I can’t lose this boy. He is great otherwise. You would never know he had this by his behavior. I am snuggling him in a warm blankie and do not want to go back in there tonight unless you tell me to. Would love to start again tomorrow. Going to take a photo then cake on the neosporin covered with non stick pads and wrap him in gauze. Please advise. I am sick over this. Thanks for listening☹️😢💜

I'm at work so my time is limited right now. I would NOT soak him in salt water. I assume this is tap water with salt added. Water has bacteria in it if it's not commercial sterile water. Pseudomonas is a water borne bacteria and you do not want that in the mix. It would not respond to either Clindamycin or Clavamox.

Sterile water from my office. Table salt. HRTS4SQRLS, am I capable of this procedure? Is that truly the exudate?? ☹️💜
