Hi everyone so I have a 9week old eastern grey. Has been doing great full of energy every day. I have had since she was 6 weeks old. But today I went to feed her formula this morning and she is just acting very tired not really wanting to run around or act as energized as normal. I figured maybe shes tired and I just woke her up from her sleep... but I'm not too sure. Just really worries me. She has red cabbage, romaine lettuce, and dandelion greens, along with rodent blocks readily available to her in her cage at all times and as been eating really well. She has alot of dribbles of milk on her fur so I am going to give her a bath with dawn dish soap and maybe it will make her feel a little better. But she just isnt her self and I'm worried. I'm still doing a 1:2 ratio for her esbilac powder formula and shes been doing great besides today seems slow/tired ? Breathings a little increase I think maybe it's just me being paranoid.

Is it possible that she aspirated? Listen to her chest. Do you hear clicking?

So I posted this earlier today in the non life threatening section but not really any responses plus she still is seeming sluggish and weak. Took one tiny bite of food.

How much formula is she taking?
What type of rodent block?

Sorry, one last question... is she eating nuts? If so, how many?

You said she is eating well.. how much does she weigh and how much is she eating?
A thought.. check her rodent blocks closely for mold or mildew.
Have you seen her drinking from her water bottle or dish?
Check her poop for any odd color or mucus.

Sorry for lack of responses -- this time of year is always like this with rehabbers beyond full to capacity and people's kids starting school, etc. Very busy time. ANYway, it is disturbing that your 9-wk old is so lethargic. Can you think of ANYTHING new in her environment over the past few days that could have triggered this? New food? New can of formula? Even a new household appliance can freak them out sometimes and they will go off their normal routine....??

One of my babies acted like this when he got lost in his fleece and couldn’t get back to the warm side of the tub. He got too cold, even with fur coming in. Does Samhe have access to heat , even though older, if you keep your home very cool? Or did temps drop like they did here last night? Not likely this is the problem, but thought I’d mention after I almost lost one from hypothermia.

Give antibiotics until you are sure it does not have pneumonia. They can go down FAST!

Hi everyone thank you for responding.. nope no clicking at all. To me it seemed like she was low blood sugar so I gave her a little bit of pedialyte and last night she perked up a bit. But now today shes not really wanting her formula, she drank maybe 6-8mls mmaayybbee and I know this is the part where they can have as much as they want within reason and she usually is biting the syringe begging for more but not today or yesterday. She maybe was drinking it then went straight to her bed. And ever since I've introduced the water bottle to her around 6 weeks she never has gone to it or tried. And I have the Mazuri rodent blocks someone here recommended bought brand new in a sealed bag and looks fine to me. Poop is a little bigger pellet then normal but I figured it's just from her growning (she gets bigger poops get bigger) but same little brown color as shes always had. Urinating just fine. I use the can powdered esbilac formula. I keep it refrigerated like your supposed to. I introduced red cabbage is the only new thing this week.... but she was loving it and going for it. Maybe I'll take it away and only give romaine and dandelion greens like I was doing? And no no nuts yet. Was trying to get her to like her blocks and veggies first.
And just to be safe like you said what kind of antibiotics and how much? Concentration? Dose ? And she weighs 161 grams. Which is great to me considering she was 91 grams when I first got her.

She should be started on baytril or ciprofloxicin, augmenten/clavamox (amoxicillin-clavulanic acid.) You only need one pill, we will send you a private message with instructions.

She doesn't have to be struggling to breathe or clicking to have AP. Something is wrong and she shouldn't be having low blood sugar if you are feeding her. Something else is wrong.

Give us a weight on her in grams and list what antibiotics you have around the house and we will help get this baby better.

Grab some baytril, do you have it in liquid form? Or you can get a 22.7 mg tab. If compounded into a liquid, let us know mg/ml.

Or it may be easier to get clavamox drops 62.5 mg/ml.

10mg/ml
25mg/ml
Enrofloxicin (baytril) compounded forms. They are like marshmallow and cheese flavors or whatever if that matters

Usually Baytril comes 22.7mg/ml. Have not heard if 25mg/ml unless someone broke it down from 100 mg injectable. Will send pm for dosing.

We have 22.7mg/ml in injectable form and then 25mg/ml for compounded liquid form

Okay so now shes up and acting a little more energized but she keeps rubbing her face keeps trying to find things to nibble on. She has rodent block romaine lettuce and dandelions available. I also hear her teeth grinding a little bit now and again.... could her teeth be a problem ??

Other than the blocks, what does she have to chew on?
My 9 week olds are normally buzz saws... destroying branches as fast as I can deliver them.
I have often wondered if maybe they need to chew at this age to 'shape' or 'settle' their teeth into place.
Always good to check teeth alignment, to take that off the list of worries. :)

They are learning how to groom, face wiping on things or wiping face with hands is okay behavior. You should always check your baby out on a regular basis, all over, and that includes teeth. If you see something that you are unsure of, post a photo and we'll look with you.

Teeth grinding is normal but providing something for her to chew on is a good idea. They are little wood shredders. Go to the healthy diet for pet squirrels for a list of safe trees and forage a twig or two for her to try out. (I learned the hard way, check it for bugs and spiders before bringing it in...)

I have to get more chewing things. It scares me to bring things in from outside. Is there anything at the petstore I could buy ? If not i will look . And this morning she up jumping around and acting more her self. Not really wanting to suckle and drink the bottle anymore. She tries but then doesnt like it and stops. But she hasn't tried other food yet either

Sometimes they seem to get burnt out on a certain type of food. They love red cabbage one day.. won't touch it the next.
I try to vary the menu, with new items from the 'most healthy' list:
- Arugula, bok choy, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, chayote, cauliflower, purslane, watercress.
I have never had much success with brussel sprouts.. but Arugula and bok choy are always winners.

Safe chewing... if you can identify trees (I am not good at it) apple, aspen, walnut, cherry, dogwood, hickory, magnolia, maple, popular...
(these are basically all trees that do not have a bark that you can peel off)

Pine cones.. they love to shred these. They pull the petals off and eat the tender stems in the wild.

A branch with dead leaves on it is good.. they shred the branch, play with the leaves, and practice nest building with them.
Just make sure it is dry wood, and not deteriorating with mold or rot.

Are you using an actual bottle with nipple? It's an aspiration risk and a 3 ml syringe with nipple is best.

Sometimes they begin to self wean but I think she should be hungry if there isn't anything else to eat. Is it warm enough, fresh enough, etc? How old is she and have you offered a rodent block yet? Henry's high protein blocks https://www.henryspets.com/hi-protein-blocks/ or Harlan-Teklad (Envigo), Mazuri, etc.

You just started antibiotics, correct? She could just be getting her appetite back. Hang in there with her and keep trying. She needs to stay hydrated while on antibiotics especially to protect those kidneys. Are you also using probiotics to help minimize upset tummy?
