My 6 week squirrel started making a clicking noise, then he stops and starts back again. Please help.

Has he aspirated formula (formula came of through his nose) while feeding?

Is he lethargic or have a loss of appetite?

Do you have any antibiotics by chance? If this is aspiration pneumonia (AP) he will need antibiotics. If you have anything, tell us what it is and someone will advise if it will be effective against AP. If you do not have any, start calling family and friends and asking. You will need only 1 pill.

The human drugs Cipro and Augmentin are very effective; animal versions are Baytril and Clavamox.

Has this baby ever aspirated, choked on or had formula come out his nose?
Clicking is often associated with aspiration pneumonia and if AP antibiotics must be given.
Do you have access to any? If not you need to call around to family, friends and see what
you can come up with. One pill would be all thats needed, let us know whatever you can
come up with and the milligram of the ab and we can tell you if it can be used and also how
to break it down and dose.
We will also need a weight of the squirrel as all meds are dosed according to body weight.
Please be aware if AP time is of the essence as AP takes them down and out fast without
antibiotics.

Someone types faster then me...:tap Thanks Spanky, same thoughts. :great

He did a gag reflex and then continued to eat. I have cephalex 500 mg in capsules. He just ate a little.

Just too cute! So what is his weight? They'll need it to dose him, if he needs antibiotics.

Hmm, that still isn't right. Check and make sure your scale is set to grams. When my babies were 6 weeks old, they were around 115 grams, give or take.

The cephalex will not be effective for AP, so please call around to family and friends for other antibiotics.

How is his appetite? Is he more lethargic than usual?

Speaking of appetite, what are you feeding them?

Baby goat replacement formula. What type of antibiotics should I be looking for? He is still drinking, acting fine and not doing the clicking any longer. Really scared me.

Cipro or Baytril (Human and animal forms of the same basic med), Augmentin or Clavamox are best, but if you find anything else post what you found adn someone will advise if it will work against AP.

I am not sure what baby goat replacement formula is exactly, but goat's milk formulas are only suitable as a temporary formula for squirrels. You really need to get some powdered (not the liquid) Esbilac:

Ok I will get some tomorrow. I live in surf city NC and it has been tough getting stuff you need with the hurricane and now some stores still are not open. I will find some and the antibiotic tomorrow. I just want the babies to be fine!

Some baby's do make some mouth "clicking" noises that can scare the heck out of you, I've even had some past panic where I'd get the meds all set up ready to give and.... no clicking.
I think I'm pretty seasoned now to be able to tell the difference but it still can unnerve one when you hear a dreaded click.
With AP the clicking is pretty constant, sometimes faint but it's there.

It's not sounding like your baby has AP but it is always good to be prepared since it takes them down so quickly.
That said, I wouldn't start any meds unless absolutely necessary.
