Hello. I have an injured young squirrel. One of my dogs grabbed him but released when I gave the command. The baby's eye was damaged however. I have had this guy since Friday night. I have hydrated him with pedialyte and also gave him a little goat milk both by syringe. He took both willingly. He is also eating walnuts, peaches, and nibbling on broccoli. He is pooping and just peed on me. His stress level is coming down and he is allowing for some scritches under his arms and neck. So to make a long story short, I feel that he is stable. Sadly his eye probably needs to come out. It is not blinking or moving and looks dead. I have been putting a topical antibiotic on it. I would like to hear your thoughts on where I need to go from here. I do not think my vet will work on him.

Hopefully someone in the Florida area can help you with a vet closer to your area but there is a vet in Port Orange that could help this little. I realize it would be a road trip, approx. 4 hours from what I can tell. If you would like the name and number pm me and I'll send it to you.

Aww poor little guy. But kudos to you for having such well trained dogs. I’ve no experience to make any recommendations except look for another vet maybe who’d be willing. Good luck ❤️

Thank you stepnstone. I am willing to make the drive for him, but hopefully someone can direct me to a closer vet... Anyone here from Tampa, Sarasota, Ft. Myers? How long do I have before an infection sets in or gangrene?

I am in Seffner, just a few miles from Tampa. I have a customer who went to turn three pinkies in to a local vet a few years ago and instead wound up raising and releasing with the vets assistance. My guess is they would help if anyone. I’ll try and reach her right now and find out which one it was.

Message left and just as soon as I hear from her I will pm you.
Info sent. It’s been a few years so if anything’s changed and they won’t see you could you let me know? Otherwise I’ll share their info with anyone asking going forward.

Does anyone know what my timeframe is to get this little guy to a vet before infection sets in? I know ASAP, but i'm going to need to make arrangements. :shakehead

Eyes are amazing with regard to healing. Your antibiotic flushes are the best thing you can do right now...even the saline solution people use for contact lenses is good for these types of injuries. So long as you do not see anything green, yellow or white oozing from the eye you are probably ok.
