Hi, I found a baby squirrel I believe to be around 4-5 weeks old.I think what happened was my neighbor cut down a tree and it must have been from the tree.I own cats and one of my cats brought it in our back yard.I got it away from them and I don't think there are any injuries that I can see. It's eyes are opened.I have it in a cat carrier and it is sleeping a lot and wrapped in a thick shirt.

I called our local shelter and they acted like unless it was injured I should just put it back into nature. The quick research I did sounds like it would not survive.
I love animals but I own three cats that are a full schedule and obviously are a major threat to it and because of my job I just can't give this squirrel the proper treatment until it is ready to be set free.
Is there anyone here who can take the squirrel or hook me up with someone or group that would take the squirrel and give it the care it deserves.
I am in Van Nuys California 91406
Thanks so much

Hi there, thanks for helping. We need to get you a thread that states "rehabber needed in ..." with your city so those near you can get in contact. Also, stick around and you may get contact info from other members for rehabber near you.

That baby needs an antibiotic as cat saliva can kill squirrels and some hydration. Sounds like you have him in a safe carrier where the cats can't get to him.

Check out this link: https://henryspets.com/baby-squirrel-care/

Do you have any left over human antibiotics at home, one pill is all you need.

Here is a 6 page primer on baby squirrel care; use the "next" in the upper right corner.

With cat caught it is imperative to give antibiotics even if there are no apparent injuries... cat saliva can be that deadly. Please check around and ask family and friends if necessary if they have any antibiotics. You'll need just a single pill to treat the squirrel for up to a week. Augmenten or Cipro would be great, but if you find something else post what it is and someone will advise if it will work with cat bites.

I will also update your thread title with your location; that will help to get folks in your area to help.

Today is your lucky day! :w00t
The reason I say that is because we're not aware of many resources in CA and CA is a BIG state. :) You are about 20 minutes from a great wildlife rehab center. It is located in Los Angeles. Coast and Canyon Wildlife Rehab should be able to help you.
Here is the contact info.

Edit... look for others. There are usually more.

Just for clarification... she means look for other babies as their usually are more than one in these situations. :thumbsup

Before I contact them I was just wondering if someone could give me an idea how this process would go.Is there anyway they can pick up the animal or is it only drop off normally. The one complication is I ride the bus and Malibu isn't that close.
Thanks

I would call them. They have a large network of rehabbers so it isn't just a center. They might have someone closer than you think. Rehabbers or volunteer transporters often pick up wildlife when there is no way for the finder to transport. They can give you the details. Other than C and C we really don't know of other safe centers in CA.
