View Full Version : I’m about a week away from releasing my squirrels and they started acting loopy.

Basically, I have a couple squirrels who can eat on their own, are weaned off milk, and eat a variety of mixed nuts and fruits. I planned to release them this week when I noticed that they were not acting...right. If you’ve seen the videos of squirrels eating fermented fruits you’ll have an idea of what they’re doing. Rubbing their bodies along the ground like they’ve gone half paralyzed. In addition, the bigger of the two seems twitchy, more than normal at least. They fall over instead of moving around normally. This happened overnight, and it hasn’t been overly hot, a bit muggy outside but the temperature in Texas has been around 85 all day and the enclosure is in the shade. I’d appreciate any guidance I can get.

If their diet is nuts they are most likely suffering from Metabolic Bone Disease which occurs when they aren't fed a rodent block and the high phosphorous content in nuts (and other things) leaches the calcium from their bones and body. They can suffer seizures, weak and breaking bones, falling over, etc.

Please start this EMERGENCY protocol tonight if you want any chance at saving them. The process is long and takes time. Hang in there.
