I just picked up a hurt baby from a friend from church— I have not had a chance to examine closely. It appears to be about 6-8 weeks old. It has an open wound. I purposely avoided taking any I. For the last two years... so I feel a lot like I’m starting over. Picking up pedialyte and a dropper now. Any other quick suggestions on so little knowledge?

For starters, no droppers! Get a syringe... ask the Pharmacist and if you say you are feeding a kitten they will be more likely to give you some supplies.

They will need some formula, Esbilac is the one you can buy in big-box pet stores and sometimes Tractor Supply.

And likely antibiotics will be needed...

That’s what I meant by droppers. Sorry I wasn’t more clear. Pet store already closed. Not able to get formula tonight. But I know hydration comes first so I have that part covered. I was thinking more wound care. I have some stuff at home— just been a while since I even looked through my critter first aid

:thumbsup

He should be okay for the night with hydration, and if he his hydrated well already at that age they may show interest in solid food. Or you could use the temporary goat milk formula:

3 parts goat’s milk
1 part heavy whipping cream*
1 part vanilla yogurt

Formula will last 48 hours in refrigerator.

Once you assess the wound, and look through the supplies on hand please post an update.

I have veterinus derma gel, silver sulfadiazine cream, infants ibuprofen and Tylenol (couldn’t remember which is safe so I grabbed both. Baby has a pretty bad sore but is very very stressed and i can’t get a good look. Front leg may be broken.

No to the Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen is okay.

Can you post pics of the wound and injuries (leg)?

Does this sound like lung damage? It’s not constant.

That agonal breathing is not good, but the video does not show any of his wounds.

If you have molasses, honey or syrup (in that order) please apply a drop or two to his gums / mouth. He needs some hydration.. and lets see the wounds?

Baby freaks out every time I touch her so it’s really hard to get pics— not going to lie— I really don’t want to get bitten. Baby is in a lot of pain it seems.

Puncture on shoulder/neck but under so far just looks like plucked fur

I do have honey. I also have pedialyte which she has taken some of. (Not a lot) would honey be better?

The honey was not intended to replace the pedialyte / hydration. It is in event the agonal breathing is caused (in part) by hypoglycemic shock.

You should be able to handle that baby... do you have any gloves? I do not really see the "wound" per se and worry it is under her arm in the armpit area.

Can you get to a vet. Slather some dermagel on the wounds for tonight and get some ibuprofen into her to help with pain—infant. Somebody smart will dose. Hydrate hydrate hydrate and some heat mayo be soothing. Use some fleece to gently handle her and give her some to snuggle into.

I think the wound is actually on her leg/elbow. Is there something I can safely clean the wound with (water, witch hazle— I do have vetericyn spray but it’s for poultry )

If I am not mistaken there are fly eggs or maggots on her. Please try to clean her up or that will be horrible. Capstar is what you need for maggots. It can be crushed in water and used orally and also to flush wounds.

You can use very diluted betadine to clean the wound. Witch hazel is probably stingy.

It is not maggots. It’s crusty— like something was on her fur before this event. It just happens to be next to the wound. I picked some of it off, figured I would get the rest when cleaning wound— can I just use plain water?

I don’t have betadyne. I seriously threw out some about 3 weeks ago because it had been sitting open for about two years and I decided I would just buy more of I ever needed it.

Plain warm water is fine for now and wetting / cleaning may allow a better view of any wounds. The wetted down fur can help to reveal a lot.

Dress the wound with the Derma Gel after cleaning.

Do you have a vet that will see her?

Do you have a weight on her for the ibuprofen dosing?

I also meant o ask how often she has that labored breathing in the video?

I am searching for my gram scale to weigh her . I actually have a dosing chart for ibuprofen that was sent to me when I had the three with Pox. The breathing is not happening very often. I was actually about to say it only happens when she gets upset from me messing with her but then she started doing it unprovoked. She has some. she has some kind of jerky movement when she tries to. I think she may have a head injury. There is a vet nearby that is also a small animal rehabber. Depending on how things look tomorrow I will try to get her over there. I’m going to try to get a video of the way she moves , see if you have an opinion on that . I’ve never seen a head injury first hand but I did see a baby tortured by pox and I saw it affect her neurologically.

She seems to be getting weaker and weaker. Is this the click starting? I know they do it when they get pneumonia

She’s gone. She was laying here asleep on a blanket on the heating pad. She started the heavy breathing so I picked her up from the heating pad— figured maybe she got too warm. She started her twitchy walk thing then she started clicking. Her breathing got slower and slower. I think something was damaged in her lungs. Maybe my handling her made it worse. Poor babe. I really really hate watching them go like this.

Being a little less cautious since I can’t hurt her anymore— it feels like several (if not all) her ribs are broken on the side with the wound. I don’t think she ever really had a chance.

Viewing the videos she was already on her way out. I seriously don't think there was anything
more you could have done besides what you did with providing a safe passage for her crossing. :grouphug
Rest in peace little girl....

I am sorry she did not make it. The injuries were just to much.

Thank you for being there for her, doing all you could and being there with her in the end so she was not alone.

I am sure she knew you were trying to help her and make her more comfortable.

RIP Sweet Baby :sad

Sometimes all we can do is provide a safe, clean, warm, quiet place to help ease their passing.:grouphug

She did not pass in the wet, cold ground surronded by crows or other predators.

Godspeed little squirrel, your bravery did not go unnoticed.:(
