What's the problem?
We don't want to start antibiotics, without making
sure of the cause and if it's needed.
If an antibiotic is needed,
we need to know which one would be the best choice.
You will need to post the weight of the squirrel in grams,
and the size pill for someone to dose accurately.

You are in an older thread. I will make you your own thread
and send you a link where to respond.

that would be great. thank you. currently i don’t have anyone who needs sulfatrim. however it is the antibiotic provided to me by my rehabber mentor. i asked her what the dosage was for future reference, and she never responded. also, the kind i have is liquid. not a tablet. thanks.

Future reference would depend on the weight of the squirrel at the time of need.
All medications are dosed by weight in grams.
You will also need to know the strength / ML of the medication in use.

therein lies at least one problem... she hasn’t given me the strength info... i wouldn’t bet money on it, but i just get the feeling she doesn’t want to share too much info with me... i had a baby a while back with diarrhea, and since it persisted for more than just a day or two, i thought i’d give him an AB to take care of anything i was missing.... she provided me some liquid sulfatrim when i first started under her, but trying to get the dosage out of her is like pulling teeth... thankfully, i corrected my baby’s diarrhea problem without the AB (he’s a pig and was overeating!!!), but it worries me that i don’t have this information on hand for when i need it.... beyond that, just getting my hands on any kind of prescription type meds is nearly impossible.... i haven’t found any rehabber-friendly vets as of yet.... and all the online places require a prescription... i’ve already lost one baby due to not having meds on hand, and i don’t want to go through that again... where do i get the meds i need if the vets won’t help????

Without a proper label you can't be sure of the dose OR if it's expired. Many folks don't have vet access but the way around that is to use human antibiotics/meds for the squirrrels. If you want to stay prepared ask friends and family for one or two tabs of

Ciprofloxicin (human form)
Baytril (animal form)
Or buy fish flox online (ciprofloxicin tablets made for fish sold without a prescription)

Augmenten (human form)
clavamox (animal form)

Be sure to inquire about expiration dates. Doxycycline is good to have on hand but is dangerous to use after it's expiration date. Prednisone is helpful to have on hand also.

I always have an unopened bottle of infant ibuprofen and infant gas x. I also always stock a jar of banana baby food, infant rice cereal and probiotic capsules for use when antibiotics are given.

Hope this helps. You have options. Better ones than taking a medication without any information attached to it from a person who isn't willing to give you pertinent details.

Depending upon what state you're in, your mentor may be playing it exactly by the rules for her safety and yours. In some states subpermittees and apprentices are not permitted to even touch or hold animals for the first year; basically they just do housekeeping (cage cleaning, etc.). She may be following a guideline that says you cannot dose or administer meds to wildlife until you are fully subpermitted or licensed. :dono

In any case, most pharmaceuticals we use on wildlife are actually human meds, so ask around your circle of friends & family. See if anyone has leftover amoxicillin, augmentin, Clavamox, Cipro or doxycycline and can spare a tablet or two for you. A little goes a very long way with tiny wild babies!

And there lies the big problem, one can't dose without knowing the strength they are dosing. :dono
"Human" meds often are used depending on the AB. We can advise if the med can be used, how to break down for the strength needed, and how to dose but we still need to know the milligram of the ab. This is what many members have had to resort to by calling around to family and friends to see what possible ab they could come up with, it usually only takes one pill to treat a squirrel.

wow... this is really great information... i really thought there was a vast difference between animal meds and human meds (i’m sure in most cases there actually are...)... my mother in law is a same-day-surgery muse tho, so i’m sure she will have some of the above mentioned meds on hand... i’ll see if i can get a couple tabs of each from her and then let y’all know the details of them for proper dosage calcualtions... also, i will get the supplies (banana baby food, rice cereal, etc) mentioned above and keep this on hand for future use as well... i am glad i am getting this info now when nothing is wrong as opposed to needing it in a hurry when time is of the essence... :) thanks everyone for all the very valuable info!!!

Okay, yall... I have gone through my medicine cabinet, and these are the meds I have on hand Please note, for most of these, there is a description on the bottle, but for other stuff, I have no idea what is what or does what. Please keep that in mind when you read through this list. I just am listing everything I found in case any of it will work for the babies. I rehab squirrels, possums, skunks, and bunnies. I have numbered everything for easier reference, because it's a pain in the rear trying to type out all these words sometimes!!!

Prescriptions:

1. Hydroxyzine HCL - 25mg tablet - exp 11/17
2. Lisinopril - 20mg tablet - exp 08/19
3. Cyclobenzaprine - 18mg tablet - 05/18
4. Hydrocodone/Acetaminophen - 10-325mg tablets - exp 06/18
5. Amoxycillin - 875mg tablet - exp 09/18
6. Montelukast Sod - 10mg tablet - exp 08/19
7. Amoxicillin 875mg / Clav K 125mg tablets - exp 07/19
8. Meloxicam - 15mg tablet - exp 05/18
9. Fluticasone Propionate - 50mcg per spray (120 metered sprays) - exp 07/19
10. Mometasone Furoate - 50mcg per spray (120 metered sprays) - exp 11/18

Non-prescriptions:

11. Naproxen Sodium - 220mg tablets - 06/18
12. Aspirin - 325mg tablets - exp 04/19

I also have liquid bandage by New Skin.

Again, I realize that some of these are most likely an absolute "no", but since I don't know what can and can't be used on animals, I just listed everything... Thanks for all your help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Green I know have been used with squirrels.
Red is a no!
One's in question maybe but I would consult with one more knowledgeable with
medications and their use on squirrels to make any determination as to their use.

Okay that is great. So I have some things on-hand that are safe. That is good. Okay, so what are the dosages for the safe meds listed below?

4. Hydrocodone/Acetaminophen - 10-325mg tablets - exp 06/18
5. Amoxycillin - 875mg tablet - exp 09/18
7. Amoxicillin 875mg / Clav K 125mg tablets - exp 07/19
8. Meloxicam - 15mg tablet - exp 05/18

And, are these "expired" meds still okay to use?

Thank you so very much to everyone for your help!!! :D

Again, dosage depends on the squirrel's weight at the time of need.
Which AB med to use depends on what one is attempting to treat,
there is not a "blanket" AB that can treat any illness or condition.
Number 4 & #8 are for pain/inflammation, they are not antibiotics.
Some meds can be safe to use depending on how long after expiration,
I personally don't know if or how long after expiration Meloxicam could be used.

That is understandable. In that case, I will just keep these meds on hand, and if something does ever happen where I might need to use them, I’ll post at that time with details and weight and such. At least I have some things that will work tho. That alone is a huge relief.

The only AB I know of which DEFINITELY cannot be used after expiration date is doxycycline. Doxy actually changes, chemically, after a certain period of time and can become toxic. As for Baytril, when I first started rehabbing a vet gave me a nice bottle of Baytril solution that was 1 yr expired. I used it successfully for the next 6 years :rotfl

The Department of Defense has a program, and probably a list, of drugs and the length of time beyond expiration date they are still effective. Many are 10+ years. The list can probably be found on the internet.
