I have 4 orphans for about two weeks now. Everything was good until this morning. One of the bigger males is breathing fast with a raspy sound. He is not nearly as aggressive about eating today.i have called all the small animal clinics in my area, can't find any to treat him. Can someone help with vet or rehabbers in my area.

Do you have any antibiotics?

Do you hear clicking when he breathes?

I have a small amount of amoxicillin my grandson was taking, that's the only thing I have. I don't hear clicking, just raspy sounding. I just read a post about puppy pads, yesterday I put one in the bottom of their box. I just removed it, washed their tub and gave them clean blankets. OMG I hope that's not what caused this :(

He could have AP. Can you get weight of baby and strength of amoxicillin ?

he weighs 130.2 grams, the amoxicillin is 400/5mL

He just finished his 3rd meal of the day, it was really, slow going for him … I'm now hearing the clicking noises each time he breaths. He also feels warm, but is shivering so I'm keeping him wrapped up snug for feeding.

The shivering is not usually a symptom of AP. But it is good to start him on abs. Keep him on it for 7 days.

Thanks so much for your help. Should I add this to his formula or give it to him separate?

ALWAYS separate meds from formula - the meds taste nasty and if he associates that with his formula you will have trouble feeding him.

Give it to him separate. Also get a probiotic a put a pinch in his formula. These drugs can cause diarrhea.

Got it :), want to keep him eating! Any suggestions on what probiotic?

First dose administered. I will let you all know how he is doing :). thanks for all the input.

The ones for humans that come powdered in capsules at the drug store are fine. You just want to add a pinch to the formula AFTER it is heated - right before you draw it into the syringe. High temps will kill the probiotics.

Update: Blue is still breathing fast, and has definite clicking with each breath. But he is still eating, and spends some time between feedings playing with his sibs. Most of the time he sleeps. Dosing with amoxicillin, but I have the word out looking for a better antibiotic. I just remembered that I do have some prednisone tabs for my dog on hand if those might be of any use, please advise. They are 10mg tabs.

See if someone has Cipro. It’s a pretty common high test drug. No to the prednisone. Sounds like he has aspiration pneumonia. He needs the ab. Good luck with your little guy. Run a vaporiser to help him breathe. Just don’t let his blankets get damp. Don’t want him cold.

Try to find Cipro, Baytril, Doxycycline or SMZ-TMP (Septra, Bactrim)

I really have not seen positive results with Amoxicillin OR Clavamox either for AP.

Time is critical.

I wouldn't use the prednisone.

Just adorable. Do you raise puppies?

BluePuppet

No :) I do own a dog though. I usually just stick to grand children. But these fur babies are such a joy!

Blue is back to his normal self today. Eagerly sucking down his milk and playing catch me if you can with his sibs. I will continue the abs for the full 7 days but it looks like he is on the mend.:w00t
