I have a baby squirrel and I've done some looking but I cant seem to find a full list of safe woods for him. I know most hardwoods but I'm specifically wondering about grapevine wood and things like that.

Here's another source that delineates between species of birch and oaks, some toxic and others non toxic, that may be helpful also.

Though most maple trees, like the Red maples, are toxic, there's perhaps an exception, the Sugar Maple, the species of maple which tree squirrels commonly are known to eat the sap from

by scorning the bark, and licking up the sap that leaks out. Yet perhaps the wood of this maple is only non-toxic when the sap becomes sweet,

which occurs when the days are warmer, and the nights are cooler? :dono

Wait, aren't all maples safe for squirrels? That second list, at exoticanimalsupplies.com, is a list for gerbils not squirrels. It lists maples & spruce, for example, as toxic & unsafe, but isn't that just for gerbils? I picked those 2 from the list because I think squirrels eat bark etc from both spruce & maple without problems. They're an important food source--in fact, red squirrels eating the buds of spruce is kind of a 'nuisance' problem for homeowners, I thought (I'm a newbie tho so I don't want my post to be taken as definitive.)

I was wondering about Java wood. It’s sold for birds to chew on. It’s untreated and listed as safe on most sites but I would like confirmation if anyone knows.
