My last long detailed post managed to disappear right as I tried to post it... 5month old grey squirrel boy, who was mostly released 2 weeks ago but has still been sleeping in his release cage almost every night, has 2 wounds, one of which is looking worse, the other is only a day old.Three days ago I noticed an area on his abdomen/ chest area at first I wasn't totally sure, well I'm still not, if it is an infected puncture/bite wound or if it could be a bot that had been scratched a bunch because of its location, initially it was slightly raised and had some dried bloody discharge, I was trying to keep him in his release cage so I could watch it and try to figure out what to do. Yesterday as I was deciding it was looking more abscess like, he managed to sneak past me and spent the day outside again.. When he was finally ready for bed I saw that he now had a new area on his right shoulder, this area doesnt look like a bot at all, its not at all a gaping wound, but its a bit bloody and it looks like some fur is missing. He hasn't been acting different but I am pretty positive he needs antibiotics but the only ones I am currently able to get/have are only baytril 10% solution, which is 6months old, and doxycycline which I know is not even close to ideal given the GI affects.. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, he just decided he needed every possible blanket type thing in his cage to go into his nest box(he has never been into making his nest cozy before) and went to sleep, I am worried hes starting to not feel well.. I don't have a recent weight, I accidentally stepped on the scare a month ago but wasn't regularly weighing so didnt replace..H9es always been a peanut though, he's probably a little more than half the weight of the full sized squirrels around here...

Do you have him confined to the RC now? Can you take a picture of the areas of concern? It sounds as though one wound could be the beginning of an abcess or a bot as you suggested. The other in the neck area could be from a fight with another male. I had a male release that would get neck wounds all the time. I cleaned them with diluted Betadine and applied antibiotic salve. After he would get into these fights and I’d bring him inside the house or into the release cage he would take a long needed rest and I could tell from his eyes that he didn’t feel great.

If you suspect a puncture wound that could possibly have come from a cat treating with antibiotic is a good choice. I’ve never worked with the liquid Baytril. Is it an injectable or oral solution? We would need the strengths of the meds and a picture of your squirrel to guesstimate his weight, preferably by an object for comparison.

I am going to send in a PM the dosing for Baytril 10% (100mg/1ml).. I am thinking that is the oral solution with the chicken pitures on it.. they put it into chicken's drinking water? My dosing is based on a 500gm squirrel which is average for Georgia but I suspect small side for MA.

If the doxycycline is expired, please discard it as, unlike many other antibiotics, it is actually dangerous to use beyond its expiration.
