We placed him or her in a small kennel with clean water and towels. Breathing does not seem labored but extremely lethargic. Eyes open. Not distressed with our presence. Very little movement, but no blood or obvious wounds. Hopefully a little rest and safety and we will be able to release him. But it has been an hour since we picked him up and still not much for activity. Poor thing is totally infested with fleas any advice?

Do you have an opportunity to try to reunite?

A bath in Dawn dish soap will help with fleas.

Here is a link with the basics of baby squirrel care, it is 6 pages long. He probably would benefit from some hydration.

I've tried to reach out to a member in your State, do not know the distance between areas.
Hopefully they will respond and can help or direct you.
Can you post a picture of baby for an age assessment?

I'm a couple of hours away, at least. Let me reach out to our master rehabber and see if we have someone licensed in that area. I also have a pdf list of all wildlife rehabbers in Iowa and will track that down and pm you.

He's precious! :Love_Icon
I know grey squirrels have a variation of color that has a lot to do within the different areas they
come from and I've had red in some of my greys but not like that. If that's a grey I want one! :grin2

I do have to say this, his fur is spiky he needs hydration.

He’s a gray? He sure looks a lot like a little foxer I have. Is his tummy white? What ever he is, he’s absolutely precious—and yeah—he could likely use some hydration.

The picture was taken just after I had given him a bath for fleas with dawn detergent. So he wasn’t quite dry. He has a reddish brown color tummy . I have tried many times to introduce water by bottle, dish, and even a tiny syringe. Not interested. He seem content to snuggle in the fleece. He moves with all legs, eyes are bright and you are so right he is precious!!

She's not a teenager. She's still a baby. Fox squirrels are much larger than gray squirrels.

I would offer formula and blocks. Make her take something by mouth, get her hydrated and offer formula. If she's anything like the one I just had she'll be an enormous pig once you stimulate that appetite.

Minnie, the baby will need to be fed. I have never seen a small one drink from a bowl.
He needs formula or at least health foods. Can you give him a tiny piece of apple or grape for hydration? I really think he needs formula by syringe. Powdered puppy Esbilac with probiotics and prebiotics. He will be content to sleep in the fleece until he gets weak and fades away. He would probably nibble on a rodent block also.

A rehabber would be ideal but I'm not sure they are close enough.

Yes, that looks like a baby fox squirrel. He definitely will need to be fed some formula once he’s hydrated. Have you added sugar to the water to see if he’ll tolerate it better? You will need to get some POWDERED Esbilac puppy formula and feed him every 4 hrs. Stimulate to pee and poop after feeding by stroking his genitalia softly with a cotton ball or tissue. He may be going on his own, but you should verify that.

Something must have happened to his mom and he came down the tree looking for help. Have you checked the area where you found him for others? They don’t always exit the nest at the same time.

Have you reached out to any of the rehabbers listed in Spencer, on the list I sent? Or others nearby?

Still waiting to hear back from our master rehabber, she, or someone, may be able to meet you and get him.... but the sooner he can get rehydrated, the better. It's a 3.5 hour trip for me so hopefully someone closer can help you asap.

He,definitely a little boy, took almost 2tbl spoons of esbalac. Will try again in 2 hours. Searching out in the grove for others nothing yet. He wasn’t real excited about the nipple so I used a syringe. Many many thanks to you all! At this point we are very hopeful . The powdered esbilac is goats milk.

The regular puppy Esbilac is better nutritionally than the esbilac goat's milk formula.

This is what you want:

You have a rehabber going out of their way to try and get you some help for this baby,
could really use some answers here....:dono

Minnie, have you reached out to any rehabbers in that area? Or have you talked with DNR? Has anyone checked him over for injuries, especially in his mouth? I'd like to rule out the possibility that he fell. We've had storms the past few days down here.... did you have any in your area?

Sorry I missed the second page! He is eating well and is more active, seems to go potty on his own as the fleece has wet spots, and doesn’t wet much with cotton balls , I checked out in the grove again and saw al larger squirrel running around the trees, probably mommy but she also had a cat stalking her lots of squirrel chatter, I would love to reunite but afraid in his weakened state that would be disastrous,

I did leave a message with the Sioux county contact. Answering machine stated she is a park ranger. I will wait to see what happens. Meanwhile it’s time to feed him again.
