Hi ~ my Northern Flying Squirrel Sebastian has had in the past small patches of fur that have come off but grew back rather quickly. He now has lost fur along the tailbone & it doesn't seem to be coming back so I'm getting concerned ! He has also seemed to be frightened & is staying in his home & not coming out to play & I'm hoping it is not related.. Besides these issues he's doing fine ~apreciate any assistance303434

Hair loss can definitely be from nutrition and more specifically lack of protein. My dwarf gray had lost all the hair on his tail but it regrew when I switched him to Harlan Teklad 2018 (18% protein) block. He has since started losing it again, but dwarfs have a multitude of issues, and he’s rather on the older side, so who knows why.

Try increasing his protein consumption opportunities. My guy loves Pure Bites dehydrated chicken cat treats. I know others that feed this to their flyers, as well.

Should you have more than one species of flying squirrel you care for, you should be aware about the parasitical disease that can adversely effect your Northern Flyer.

In addition to shrinking the northern squirrel's habitat, Mahan says, fragmentation has brought northern and southern squirrels into close contact. That means trouble for the northern squirrel, she says, because the southern variety carries an intestinal parasite, Strongyloides robustus, which is apparently lethal to its northern cousin.
