I got a new guy in yesterday AM and every time I try to feed he screams his head off calling for mom. He takes a few sips of fox valley and proceeds to cry again. A citizen found him and was trying to feed him cow milk for 2 days before bringing him to me. I was able to feed pedalyte to clear up his diarreah and I thought the crying would subside but it’s getting worse. It looks like he also tried to suck himself as the tip of his pen is is red and bloodshot. I’ve put medication on it to help so I’m not sure if that has anything to do with the crying. I also put him with my other pinkies hoping he would calm down but it’s been 24 hours and he’s still very upset and not really eating.
Have you ever had an upset baby?

The self suckling is a big problem. Make sure the tip isn't blocked. Stimulate to make sure he can urinate. Of course he needs stimulating when feeding but make absolutely sure he can pass urine. Lubricate the tip with Vaseline, or an antibiotic salve. If the tip is blocked the scab must be removed. When his belly is full he should stop self suckling but some need a toga wrap to stop it.
Some are very afraid and do cry, especially if the eyes are open. It's so sad. :( In those cases, when feeding, I cover the face with the corner of a fleece that I wrap them in. What they don't see isn't as scary.
I have struggled with a few to get them to suckle. Let's face it, a rubber nipple isn't like mom but they will adapt. A few times I resorted to putting a little molasses or honey on the nipple tip.
Just to be sure, there aren't any obvious injuries, right?

No injuries I am aware of and his eyes are still closed.
His penis is not bleeding it just looks red and has a small Hickey like red mark. I’m making sure he pees after every feeding. I put some antibiotics on it and am looking to make a little belly band to cover it. It just breaks my heart to hear him cry.

Does he have a stuffie, or two, in with him? They like to cuddle up against something, it makes them think they aren’t alone. Does he also cry when you hold and snuggle him?

He’s doing so much better now, I think he just had to get used to his new environment he is taking 1cc of formula now with no crying!
Thanks!!
