One of my rehabbed squirrels has developed a very bad case of Squirrel pox. 1st time I
have ever seen it.
We have rehabbed a lot of squirrels this year & have a huge population living on my land.
I've tried to trap. No luck so far. caught the wrong one.
Looking for suggestions & ideas of ways to deal with it, or treat if I capture him. I don't feel confident
I can handle him if I catch him.
Any info will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you
Hi there. This rehabber in Canada has had to come up with her own treatment for pox because she can't have everything the US has shipped to her.
Here is her success story and what she does to help the pox squirrels: https://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?60028-Stormhaven-Garden-Wildlife-Rehabilitation-Pox-Protocol-Trial-2017-case-4&highlight=runestonez

Are you in Connecticut or Canada? I had resolved that if I ever had another pox case I would use the Stormhaven protocol but combined with Acyclovir (or Vanciclovir). Especially the physical care.
I do not think there is anything in the protocol that would prevent adding the antivirals?

Not unless the supplements she uses in the balls cause a problem with using both. I'm not familiar with one or two of them.

Thank you very much! I will try to get everything & see if it helps.
My concern is it will spread to the other squirrels

I too am in Connecticut and had a call a couple of weeks ago about an injured squirrel in west haven. It was not injured, it and a few others had pox. The one in question passed before it was gotten to the vet and the others are to far dispersed. I'm really sorry that it is here and that your release has it ... :sad

I am of the understanding that squirrel pox is a virus, and will therefore only respond to antiVIRALS, such as Acyclovir. I thought there was a dosing chart based on weight somewhere.

There isn't any verified fix for Squirrel Pox, it is a form of a herpes virus, from what I understand. Some of us had success with treating and others haven't. I don't have enough emperical data to make definitive statements about treatment, but I would always follow the protocl that I got from the one lady who posted the treatment on her website. I think someone did reference her info.
Acyclovir
Immune Booster
Gold Bond Medicated Foot Powder
Triple Antibiotic Ointment (i used an eye ointment)
Metacam
The above is a list of ingrediants I've used on 2 squirrels with success. I also caught their pox super early and I do think that is something that is important for success.
I know this post is older, but if anyone wants a breakdown of what to do, let me know. Although I'm pretty sure I posted my method here last year
Good Luck I HATE HATE HATE this disease!!!
