View Full Version : 2 week old indian palm squirrel
Hi, one week back I got a nest with 3 Indian palm squirrel babies. One was already dead with head injury. I warmed The babies and kept the nest outside but to no use. Their eyes were not open. I hydrated them with the ors I read about in your forum. Next day I took them to a vet, vet suggested lactogen stage 3 for human babies every 2 hourly. So I made the formula, further diluted it to 70:30 and fed them warm.2 days later one is having diarrhoea and because of it his tail is also red. Other one is not passing stools. For diarrhoea vet gave enterochronic sachet to be given 0.1cc every day. Little better but still stools are watery. They are active, playful and ready to take food, there eyes are also open now what I can do please help.

Do you have a powdered product in India to replace mothers milk for puppies? Here in the USA we have a product called Esbilac. Can you get goats milk?
I have beaphar lactol. I can get goats milk too by tomorrow.thanks for replying promptly

I believe Royal Canin Puppy Formula is available in India. I’m pretty sure baby Palm squirrels have been raised successfully on Royal Canin. I have a friend in India who has had a squirrel. She might be close enough to give you advice. I’ll email her. Can you get a good quality rodent chow? That should be their first food. If their little bums are red from diarrhea, put some vaseline on well dried skin to protect it. Also, add some rice baby cereal to their formula. It should help the diarrhea.
How to prepare the formula? Can we add fat even if they have diarrhoea or constipation?
5% of body weight - refers to daily amount or one time feed?
The vet has advised to alternate between formula and rehydrating liquid (d25) is this okay to give as my squirrels are losing weight.

5-7% of body weight is what they should be taking AT EACH FEEDING!
Alternating formula and rehydration is very wise -- your vet is correct. It will help both the diarrhea and the constipation for both babies. I agree that if you can get Royal Canin it is a high-quality formula and many Indian palm squirrel babies have been successfully raised on it. I believe the particular product is called "Babydog".
I don't know what D25 is but you can hydrate safely and effectively with water in between feedings.
If I am using water to rehydrate, is there going to be 2hrs gap between water and feed
If you feeding them every four hours and also giving water in between each feeding at the two hour mark, that is fine. Is that what you're asking?
I have added rice based cereal and full fat yogurt to their formula. Still no change in diarrhoea. To the 3tspoon of formula I am adding 1/4 tsp cereal and 1/2tsp yogurt.

Did you change the formula all at once or gradually? Sometimes a sudden change will upset them. Does the poop smell bad? There’s something called coccidia that babies sometimes get. The poop smells awful—sickley sweet foul. Your vet should be able to provide meds to fix that. Are the babies on heat? India can be HOT but if they are in airconditioning, they will need a heating pad under half of the container. How are they being fed? Syringe? Watch they don’t aspirate—get milk in their lungs. Has Asmitha contacted you? She has raised a squirrel. She may be very helpful—or at least someone to talk squirrels with. Feed every four hours 5% of their weight. Once the diarrhea is under control you should see them flourish.
Is it also possible to feed them without syringe. I am using nozzle of the scalp vein set as nipple. One of my squirrels is finding it hard to suck on it. They are I think 3 week old. There ears

Can you get 1cc syringes? Without needle of course. If not, try a cosmetic sponge cut into a v shape. The cosmetic sponge is very dense but will absorb formula and the baby may be able to suck on it easier. I would use a dropper as a last resort. It’s urgent the formula gets in but equally urgent they don’t get anything in their lungs. Baby gray squirrels get their bottom teeth at three weeks, top teeth at four and their eyes open at five weeks (all approximately)
I have changed the formula suddenly. Can you please explain gradual manner of changing. No she hasn't contacted. But if it is possible I can contact her. My squirrel's poop is frothy and yellow and sticky, I have not paid attention to the smell, I will do that. Will the medicine not be too harsh on them? Thanks for the quick response you give.

When changing or introducing formula it’s done in steps. For a few feedings, give them 75% old formula mixed with new formula (or water if introducing formula for the first time) Then after a few feedings 50/50 new and old, after a few feedings 75% new formula and 25% old formula and then straight formula. I sent a PM with her email address. Can the vet do a culture on their poop to make sure there are no parasites or bacterial issues? They’re little systems are so messed up I might even try hydrating for a couple of two hour feedings and then start with dilute formula. Did you get the Royal Canin? I might even try a dose of immodium just to stop the runs. Someone here can help with dosing but will need a weight. Their little systems need a break. I hope some of the experts chime in. If the baby won’t suckle, you can dip a corner of clean white cotton cloth in the formula and drop by drop feed your baby. Have to go painfully slow. Don’t want to give it more than it can swallow or it will aspirate.
It's such a great help and confidence I am gaining from you people.

HOLA !
I am in Costa Rica and have been "assisting" the local squirrels for 9 years now. I hope your little friends settle down soon >> and feel better.
Right now your attention is on formula...but, later, when they get into whole foods...I can give you a list ( with photos) of the local fruits and vegetables that my CREW enjoys...maybe some are local to your area also.
Praying that your little ones get healthy & strong soon--
Saludos,
Stosh

Where I can find vitamin mix for the squirrel blocks. Please help
Now they are on royal canine babydog formula. I am diluting it 1:4 formula:water. And adding boiled egg yolk around 1/8th of the egg and some 3/4tsp of rice based baby cereal

You should bring that ratio up to 1 part formula 2 parts water, in order for them to get the full nutrition needed.

Can you send some pictures of your babies? In the States we get vitamins from Henry’s Healthy Pets. I guess vitamins could be shipped to India but the postage may be really expensive. Check the nutrition section and see if you can find a comparable animal vitamin. I found an avien vitamin once that was close—not enough calcium but something. What sort of rodent blocks can you get there (if you CAN).
I am not able to find any rodent block. Only some calcium block for teeth.

I still have to mix egg, yogurt and baby cereal?

Hi Nid,
In India the best thing to buy for the squirrels as food would be Choostix Petasure Lactocer for Puppy and Kitten Milk. You can get it from Amazon India. For milk Royal Canin seems fine.
For the 1CC syringe/or any other syringe you can get it at any local pharmacy shop which are plenty in your area.
For rehydration you can use simple WHO ORS widely available at any pharmacy or given free at govt dispensaries. Same dilution as for human adults is fine. It is the osmoles that matter brand is irrelevant. Do not use D5W. Normal Saline or Ringer Lactate would be better options. Pedialyte name is a misnomer as it can be used in any age group regardless of what is written on the label.
As the temperature there is quite warm already do not put them in too many towels as the babies will overheat. Ventilation is very important.
If you can afford you can order fortidiet 5 lbs pack(approx 2.2 kg) = 8 USD https://www.amazon.com/Kaytee-Forti-Health-Animal-5-Pound/dp/B001VJ56Z8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1531147677&sr=8-1&keywords=fortidiet+mouse from Amazon USA as some sellers ship it to India (Rs 550 plus shipping compared to Rs 8000 if you buy it from someone in India). It will be way cheaper than anything you can find in India. I would visit the local vet clinic and check with them what they use for rodents. You can also buy EBSILAC from Amazon USA or some other websites as I checked some sellers ship to India. Note however to expect a 4-6 week period for delivery no matter what shipping you choose unless you use FEDEX or UPS which will be not worth it. I send many packets to India and I know the costs very well. Good option in-case you may need these in the future just find the cheapest and get them shipped via normal mail.
USPS is the cheapest option and basically the shipping is more expensive than the products in most cases. I would send you 10 pounds of fortidiet rodent blocks if you would be willing to pay for the shipping. I will also add in a box of EBSILAC. That is the best I can do. I am expecting a shipping cost of 60-70 USD for these based on my experience but due to the weight it could be more. I can check with my local USPS if you get interested in my offer. Shipping is a killer to India sadly.
Do you have any contact in Himachal Pradesh or Chandigarh area?
Best.

Yes like the instructions it has on the back. Liquid warm form. I had some one known travelling there but they had too much stuff to carry rodent blocks with them.
Shipping would be the best option if you ever need them. Just sent me a private message and we can work out the details.
