Hi. We are caring for a baby we found the Sat of Memorial Day weekend. We are guessing he is now about 6 weeks old. Eyes are open now. were closed when we found him. Since last night he hasn't eaten much, starts to fall asleep while eating. Today he hasn't really eaten at all. He tries to climb and then just falls over. He seems likes he is breathing faster and making a clicking noise when breathing. He's still on puppy formula. Trying to wean but he won't eat the Timothy biscuits we got. Tried tonight even just to give him some pedialyte. He turns away from feeding. I'm worried this poor little guy is not well.

Sounds like he could have aspiration pneumonia AP. Do you have any antibiotics like Baytril/ Cipro or amoxicillin/Clavamox? This is deadly if not treated very quickly.

I don't. Would taking him to the vet first thing in the morning be best?

Unless it is a squirrel friendly vet, most vets will not see wildlife. Unfortunately, they often will not give the squirrel back unless you are a wildlife rehabber. Do you happen to know if your vet will see the squirrel?
Can you ask around to friends and neighbors for one pill. We can dose it for you.
What are you feeding this baby? Are you feeding it warmed?

I don't know if my vet will. I just checked their website and they see exotic pets but no mention of squierrels. I am feeding him puppy formula. 1 table spoon of powdered formula with 4 table spoons of water. It is warmed.

I might be able to get cipro from my mom, but would be able to get it till late tomorrow afternoon. :(

We can help with getting the baby on tract concerning feeding and other issues, but if this is AP, and it sounds like it is, you must get antibiotics or your baby will die. Would your vet sell you some? Most won't. Do any friends with a dog or cat have any leftover meds. Women are often prescribed Cipro fo UTI's. Call friends and have them call friends. Like I said, you only need one pill. We will need to know the strength and what kind and your baby's weight.

Unfortunately NJ is one of the strict States when it comes to wildlife.
No license, squirrel is confiscated. Squirrel is compromised (AP) squirrel is euthanized.
Also unfortunately AP takes them down fast and AB's are his only saving grace.
I'd be banging numbers looking for ab's, friends, family, coworkers...

Keep checking. AP is easily fixed, but not without the proper antibiotics. I am making an educated guess that late tomorrow afternoon could be too late.

There is a guy in town who does animal rescue. Would someone like him have meds on hand? I just don't know if he is an official rehaber but everyone in town knows of him and he's the go to guy if you have raccoons, squirrels in your attic, or baby geese that need to get to water.

Just posted on Facebook. It's almost 12:30 am here. So not really a time I can call people. Would a rehaber be able to take care of him?

The only way to know is to ask him. Are you interested in turning your baby squirrel over to a rehabber if we can find one for you?
can you post a picture of your baby on TSB?

That is what Wildlife rehabbers are trained to do.

Willing, but I have to get the kids to school between 7 and 8:30, and unfortunately I can't call out of work because I'm already off Thurs and Fri for my grandmother's funeral.

Let TSB know as soon as you get meds if you can get them and we'll dose. You will need a 1 cc syringe to dose. You can get that at a drugstore. At six weeks old this baby needs to be fed 4-5 times a day. You also need to take a few feedings to get to a 2:1 water/powder mixture. But until he gets meds, he won't take in much formula.
So very sorry to hear about your Grandmother.:grouphug

I'll hang around here for awhile but with fluid in the lungs (AP) without ab's time is not on our side.
Keep him warm and comfortable and we can all pray for a miracle to come through...

These NJ F&W licensed rehabbers do squirrels and are in nearby Monmouth County:
Teja Anderson, 62 Monmouth Pkwy., Monmouth Beach, NJ 07750 917-797-1324
Mammals: Chipmunks, flying squirrels
Melissa Jacobs, 71 Lincoln Ave., Neptune City, NJ 07753 732-775-5157 or 877-472-8945
Mammals: Rodents (chipmunks, squirrels, etc.), minks, skunks, rabbits, opossums, raccoons
Jean Parker, Garden State Wildlife Center, PO Box 424, Howell, NJ 07731 732-908-2345
Mammals: Rodents (chipmunks, squirrels, etc.), minks, skunks, rabbits, opossums, raccoons
And Atlantic County:
Peggy & Suzanne Fenton, Wildlife Aid, 155 Asbury Rd., Egg Harbor Twp., NJ 08234 609-927-0538
Mammals: Rodents (chipmunks, squirrels, etc.),
Do not take a squirrel to any rehabber that states they do raptors for obvious reasons. The ones listed above do not have raptors and do have squirrel experience.
FYI Squirrels do not eat Timothy biscuits. Quality rodent block is what they need and only when old enough to nibble on solid food.
The ONLY puppy milk to feed squirrels is this one and it's 2 parts water with 1 part formula thoroughly and fed slowly: https://www.chewy.com/petag-esbilac-puppy-milk-replacer/dp/125375
There is more to feeding than meets the eye: https://www.henryspets.com/3-formula-feeding/

I can personally vouch for, and TSB vouches for, Jean at Garden State WC -- she is "I Love Lucy" on this board and she is an excellent rehabber with a beautiful facility I visited this past March. She attended our Gathering of Nuts for the first time this year so other members have met her, too.

Seriously doubt this baby made it through the night...
With the 1-4 watered down formula he had no energy to fight anything
and the clicking with breathing definitely singled AP. :(
