Hi .. Although Maddie is better than she was and I know its going to be a long road.. I am concerned .. because she will not eat anything other than the mash I make her.. and that is licked off my finger 3 times a day.. I give her water but have to feed it to her as if she were an infant again.. She has a water bottle in her cage but I cant tell if she is using it or not.. But she doesnt seem to want the water either.. I made her some blocks using Rodent blocks, puppies milk, unsweeted applesause , oat meal, some raisns and some ground up almonds, avcodos and some natural peanut butter she will eat the soft mash but doesnt want anything to do with the baked block.. Her next door neighbor my male Ashe loved the blocks..
Is this normal for the way she is actting with her eatting and drinking?
She is under her light 2 twice a day and I still am giving her tums in her water every other feeding ..
Thanks in advance for any and all help!!!

Cut out the almonds and peanut butter.

From Livestrong.com
Foods high in phosphorus can inhibit calcium absorption because phosphorus requires vitamin D for absorption. Vitamin D is also required for the absorption of calcium. Foods that are high in phosphorus include green leafy vegetables, whole grains, soft drinks, dried beans, fresh fruits and peanut butter. These foods compete with calcium rich foods for vitamin D in order to be absorbed, causing calcium to lose out. Although these are mostly human foods you will see that PB is listed.

You need to order these items ASAP:

Tina, I copied this off of your other thread. I think these links are so important that I wanted to make sure you saw them.
I'm not sure if this is something you're interested in but if you would like to meet me half way I can give you half a bag of Henry's Healthy Blocks (Picky Eater Block). I know that Tina (the other one) :tilt was going to get some blocks for you but you probably need them soon. 1/2 way from my location would be either Plant City or Bartow. Let me know if you want to meet and we can arrange it. Patti

Tina, I thought I would share some very helpful links with you.

The first is the treatment protocol for Metabolic Bone Disease.
Follow the instructions in the treatment plan and Maddie should do fine.

The second link is the Healthy Diet for Pet (captive) squirrels. It gives you information about how to properly feed a squirrel in captivity.

The third link is a chart with calcium to phosphorus ratios of different foods. The best foods have 2 parts calcium to 1 part phosphorus. (2:1)
The body tries to maintain a ratio of 2:1 calcium: phosphorus. If the diet is high in phosphorus rich foods like nuts the body will strive to balance this out by pulling calcium from the bones. This is what causes MBD. It is more than just brittle bones. It is also a Metabolic syndrome due to depleted free calcium in the blood. Calcium is a critical mineral for many Metabolic processes.
The chart will help you understand why some foods are excellent in terms of calcium and other foods are horrible.

An example would be kale with a near perfect ratio 2.4:1 (Very good food)
An example of a very bad food is pine nuts with a ratio of 1:35.9
Because of this dreadful ratio, I NEVER feed pine nuts.
If you look at all of the nuts you will see why they are only given as treats and not a significant part of the diet.

I hope these links help. If you have questions don't hesitate to ask.

The link to the pure cal powder from Henrys is better than Tums. Leigh can advise proper dose when you order.

Also Fox Valley 20/50 is palatable and contains calcium balanced with phosphorous and vitamin D in the correct amount.

If it means using a syringe and hand feeding for a while - so be it!

She may not eat any Henrys blocks so you may need to make booballs less calcium robbing ingredients.

Hi Tina its Tina from the meeting last Saturday. No PEANUTS or Peanut butter at all. Soft foods...and if you have to syringe fed her than do it. You can buy Esbilac formula and mix as it says . Try and syringe feed her a mix. Get baby rice cereal, organic whole milk yogurt, nutrical and then some formula...make the consistency like a very loose oatmeal. Give that to her 4 times a day plus cantalope, mashed avacado. If you need me to show you this...call me I will drive to you. Do not wait hun. I told you I would come. I am available Sunday. Call me, I am not on here or anywhere else much.
