Hello friends! It’s been a while but I still chime in from time to t Me. Tonight I might need advice. Hammy fell off the kitchen table today and I think he hurt himself. He actually got in my purse and rolled off the table with the purse. He ran to his cage and laid down for a bit then came back out. He acted as though he didn’t want me to touch him so I just let him crawl onto me. He had trouble sitting up to eat on his hind legs. He finally went into his cage and took a nap. It’s been a few hours and he just woke up doing a chirping noise like a sneeze. As though he’s trying to sneeze and it hurts. He’s breathing hard and laying down. I gave him a nut and he chews and stops. Looks at me and starts again and stops. I know he’s in pain and I can’t do anything. Prayers please!!!! He hasn’t done the sneezing/chirp again. It’s been a half hour since. He’s just laying there looking pitiful trying to eat a hazelnut. Please pray it’s not a head injury although it’s been several hours since he fell. Almost 8 hours.

Do you have him on the Henry's diet? The reason I am asking is some squirrels get bone weakness and susceptibility to injuries due to Metabolic Bone Disease.

Can you gently palpitate him all over and see if he reacts to pain in his hips, legs, spine etc?

Do you have any Meloxicam (Metacam)?

He’s climbing around in the cage now , to get to his water bottle, but kind of slowly. He drank water and peed then took a hazelnut quickly from my hand. Went back in his box. He lets me pet him but didnt want me to pick him up. He will crawl on me though. He’s usually going down for the night about this time. He’s gone in his box now so I don’t know if he’ll come back out. I’m keeping vigil and keep an eye on him. Still a little worried. He’s almost 8 years old. He’s been my ‘safe place ‘ since my dad passed away a few years ago. He’s my baby.

You know around 8 he is heading into his senior years? Sounds like you have been doing everything right if he made it that far!

Yea. I know he’s getting older. I am very lucky to have had him this long. I watch his diet and he only gets junk food every once in a while when mama has something good. He had a piece of a pop tart this morning. Lol He came out a few minutes ago and ate some fresh greens and fruit. Then he went back to bed. I guess he’s ok. Maybe he’s just sore. Hopefully he’ll be better on the morning.

Do you have anything for pain? If you can post what you have and someone can dose it for you it may get him to feeling better quicker. I imagine he’s just sore and needs to take it easy.

I hope it is just that he is sore; giving him a heat source under half his cage is warranted.

His behavior does seem to indicate he is in pain.

With a fall where a squirrel cannot sit up he may have injured a hip or his pelvic area.

Are you able to take him to a vet to have him x rayed to see if anything is broken, etc..?

Don’t have any pain medicine. ☹️ I use to have something for my dog but I think we don’t have it anymore. I’ll search. It’s been a long time

We have a vet but he’s acting a little more normal. I’ll see how he is in the morning. When I saw him in my purse this morning I couldn’t jump up fast enough to break his fall. We had been to Logan’s steak house and I put a couple of peanuts in there for him. They’ve been in there about 6 weeks or so and I forgot they were in there. He was digging at the bottom when his weight shifted and my purse rolled over off the table. There wasn’t a lot of stuff or anything heavy. My purse is small. That was the good thing. Poor little guy. I hate my job. They changed my hours so some days we don’t get to spend a lot of time playing. If any at all. I’m trying to change that.

You are still using natural meds right? Do you have homeopathic Arnica?

If so, you want to get that into him as it will help with bruising and/or tissue damage.

I would take him to your Vet if he doesn't return to normal by tomorrow; at his age you can't be to careful for a fall can be a far more serious thing.

He is drinking a lot of water and peeing. More than normal. He came out to eat some more, peed, and then drank some water and went back to bed. He’s crawling and climbing ok. Hmm?! He’s sitting up too.

Are you able to check his teeth, that's always a concern with a fall...

I think they are ok. He gnawed on a hazelnut and then ate it. He’s eating and he chewed and shelled a few pumpkin seeds I handed him. I thought that too. Last time he fell about a year and a half ago and he got a bloody nose. He was sore but ok after a day or two. Scary when they think they are super squirrels and want to do acrobatic stunts. He’s a mess sometimes.

Glad to hear he is sitting up and drinking water.

More than normal peeing may not be from the fall, but from lowered kidney function due to his age. What is the color of his urine?

See list for various Homeopathic remedies for various kinds of pain.

I realize you don't know where it is, yet Arnica is a good place to start.

Arnica 30 c three times a day at least a few hours apart.

Just incase it turns out to be a head injury, or for future reference,

homeopathic "natrum sulphurican" is used for head injuries and injuries to the spine.

Do not give more than one remedy at a time, but space all doses at least a couple of hours apart.

When my girl was 10 she had a back problem; yet she still did her fip upside down thing just because she is a squirrel!

Before she did her flip she would look right at me, then at the top of her cage where she wanted to flip to, then me, and I said no, but she did it anyway.

She just wanted to make sure I was there when she did it, so I could help her down.

Ok Thanks for pain medicine advice. I message you if I have any questions.

Yes they are squirrels and even though he knows when I say no he’ll still do it sometimes. Most of the time he doesn’t he does naughty things to get my attention. They don’t realize they are not spring chickens anymore. Sometimes i forget I’m going on 53 and I can’t do a lot of stuff. Depressing.

I give squirrel board a lot of credit. I learned a lot and he wouldn’t be here(not to mention my others I’ve raised and released, Chloe and Chipper) if it wasn’t for all the wonderful people who helped me. I also raised some wild rabbits and released them. Again TSB helped me raise them too.

Update on Hammy. He’s doing fine just sore. He’s eating and drinking and climbing a little so it’s going to be ok. He gave me squirrel love today. We snuggled a little and I spoiled him a little. Thanks again from me and Hammy. Love to you all! God bless you!❤️❤️❤️🐿🐿🐿🌹🌹🌹
