Hello all! My little Wilbur seems to have injured his toe and possibly his wrist as well. I noticed him limping earlier and when I went to pick him up he immediately got very vocal to let me know it was painful. He did let me look at it and it looks pretty swollen to me and one of his toes is a good bit larger than the rest and is very red. When I took the pictures this evening he didn't protest at all when I was touching him which concerns me even more. I may need some help with finding a vet nearby if you all think it needs to be examined. I live in AL and I am terrified Someone will report me and he will be taken from me. I know there is another TSB user that lives in my area but I am not sure how to get in touch with them. Anyways, it would be nice to have a local contact for advice/resources. As always, thanks for the help. I can't stand seeing my little guy in pain😭

How do you think your boy got hurt?
An anti-inflammatory would be advisable to reduce inflammation, swelling, pain. Would you have any meds on hand such as Meloxicam?
In the absence of available meds you can purchase Infant liquid Ibuprofen (Motrin) and administer for the same, you would need to obtain
a weight for proper dosing. We can help you with that.
I'm unaware of the member you refer to but will pm you a name with number you can call for possible assistance and /or advice.

Unfortunately we do not have any meloxicam. We have vimovo which is an anti-inflammatory but would it be safe? If not, we have infant ibuprofen but I would need some help with the dosage if possible. And thank you for the contact info!!! Wilbur seems to be feeling a lot better today but his little toe is still pretty swollen. Just weighed him and he is 565g

Wilbur would get 0.14 every 4 hours for pain.
Do not dose this for a long period of time as
it can be hard on the kidneys. Just a couple of days, TOPS.
Keep him well hydrated when on any meds.
Is the strength that you have 50mg/1.25ml?

Yes that is the strength I have. Thank y'all so much! Hopefully he will be feeling better in a few days. He's definitely his normal spunky self today.

Poor Wilbur just can't catch he break. The swelling in his hand seemed to be down today which is great. But then he gets stung by a red wasp not 10 minutes ago, ON THE OTHER HAND 🤦🏼*♀️ I don't even know how In the world the thing got in here. Anything I need to keep An eye out for? I feel so terrible.

Hi, Wasp stings can be life threatening.

I know that benedryl can be used, but have no idea how to dose it with this other med you are given presently.

I left a message for one of the rehabbers on the board. Please repost your post on the wasp sting in Life threatening forum to get their attention.

Hi, I hope your little Wilber heals soon. The wasp's sting might hurt him more than the toe. Try a baking soda paste on it for a short time. My little Missy hurt her back toe several years ago. I think she may have got it caught in the hinge of the cage door. Just lately I have noticed that the nail on that toe is growing in a circle and giving her trouble when she walks or climbs. Is there an exotic vet near Cypress, Texas? Thanks and God bless little Wilber.

Are you sure he was stung? Did you see it happen? Watch for lethargy and swelling.

Do you have any children's Benadryl 12.5mg/5ml strength? For a 1 pound squirrel I believe the dose is 0.3 mL. I think 0.1 mL would be safe for Wilbur. There is a chart for this and I am looking for it. I would not administer unless there are symptoms.

Note: Epi pens are not to be used on squirrels! That article is to highlight possible reactions in humans.

Dosage for Benadryl (Childrens 12.5mg/5ml strength) would be 0.52ml every 8 hours for a 650g squirrel.

It is a pretty safe drug, I would probably just start it in case he has any allergic reaction.

I didn't see The entire incident because he was on top of our kitchen cabinets but I did see Wilbur freak out and run away and then he started biting and rubbing that one hand on his face. When I went to investigate I saw the wasp. I did not see any swelling before he crawled into his nest and I checked him again this morning and didn't notice any swelling. He was his normal feisty self.. I had no idea this was life threatening ori never would have gone to bed last night.

It’s good to hear Wilbur is doing well. If you haven’t noticed any swelling, or any other problems, I would think that he is fine. :dance I’m sure it was quite painful when it happened, though.

Do wasps lose their stinger when they sting a victim? I can’t remember which stinging critter does, but I’d check his hand thoroughly to be sure there isn’t a stinger left in it. :grin2

The wasp stinger is straight, which is why they can sting repeatedly. Their venom disolves flesh, leaving a hole. Wasps will defend their nest, but are also carnivores that sting their prey to kill and eat them.

Bees have hooked stingers and a bulb containing venom, that they pump into the animal that they sting. For this reason they don't need to sting repeatedly in defense of their hive; yet in doing so they give up their lives leaving their stinger in their enemy. Honey bees gather pollen to bring back to their hive, which in then made into honey, and into royal jelly to support their Queen.

Some species of bees are carnivores, like those from Africa that have been imported to our Continent.
