I have a 4 year old male grey that is throwing up a very bad smelling orangish colored vomit. He is rubbing the sides of his little jaws up against things a lot & is very out of strength. I am so stupid for forgetting to put up the hard cat food in the room he gets to play in while I'm gone to town & I wondered if maybe he gorged himself on cat food & got sick. He isn't throwing up right now & has taken 2 droppers of water. Is there anything else I can give him to help?

Some questions: Is he a captive (indoor) squirrel? What brand & type is the cat food? Is your squirrel allowed to free range inside or is he confined except when supervised?
Regarding actual vomiting in these sense that we do: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/why-rodents-cant-throw-up-in-case-you-were-wondering-25707720/

He has been with us since September 18th 2013(day before my mom died) He has crooked front teeth & we have to cut monthly, but yes he is a captive. He's allowed to run when supervised but when running errands I let him run confined in my bedroom/ bathroom. The cat food bowls are always empty or only left with one or two pieces in them when he is left there to run. The cat food is red, orange, brown & the vomit looks kind of like a mixture of that but it smells soooooo bad. He has never thrown up in his 4 & half years of life & this vomit smells terrible. He is having little spurts of energy but is still committing & I spoke with Ms. Leigh from Henry's Healthy Pets & am getting some molasses at Wal-Mart right now to get him hydrated again. Thank you for responding & if there are any ?s I haven't addressed I am sorry, once I get home I will try to answer better but thank you for any & all help. You guys are angels!

One of the first things I think of with an uncaged squirrel is he ingested something he should not have, that's the reason I asked. Squirrelproofing a room for unsupervised runs literally means a bare room. We just had a poster on the board with a sqrl who bit into a poisonous battery. I am wondering if the "vomit" is a mouth infection and you are seeing blood and pus (+odor) coming from his mouth. Do you have a vet that can do a thorough examination of the mouth under light sedation? Do you do the trims? Sometimes Incisor problems (malocclusion) lead to points on the molars that can cause injury and infections inside the mouth that are not easily visible. It's also possible the "vomit" may be cat food that he was eating but won't pass down b/c there is a partial blockage of the esophagus (water could still pass).
Just throwing some thoughts out there.

I apologize for the long amount of time, but he is sooo much better now. I really believe he just overdid it with the cat food. I gave him a couple of stoppers of homemade rehydrating solution & spent a lot of time with him yesterday. I examined his mouth/ teeth very well & everything looks just fine. Oh, yes I do trim his teeth myself. There are not vets around here that will help with squirrel issues & I probably could not afford the bill if there was. I buy new trimmers about every other time his teeth need cut & I do things very careful & calmly. Over the 4 & half years that he has been in my life I have learned so much & cutting his teeth is no simple job like trimming nails so when it's time I make sure that he is ready(as much as he can be) & that everything being used is sterilized & accessible so that the procedure goes as smoothly as it needs to. He has been such a great friend & even though he & I both hate having to do it, I believe he understands it has to happen. Thank you so much for your responding & if you have any advice I will gladly listen to anything that you can offer.
