What does everyone think about his leg?

That looks like a birth defect to me. I look forward to hearing what others have to say about his prognosis.
Are they on heat. Are you feeding them? If so, what and how often?

Looks very swollen and likely infected to me. It may just be the pic or swelling, but the angle of that leg seems off. I'd be looking to get an x-ray and very likely starting antibiotics. The end of that stub looks like exposed bone.

Oh no....poor baby :( it could be a birth defect...it also could be predation by mice or rats...we've seen that before :shakehead is it healed? I don't like the swelling...makes me think you need to get him on some antibiotics...if this is a wound and the bone gets infected it could be deadly. We need some heavy hitters on which abs to use too. I know some are better for wound care and perhaps bone infection. They look very healthy otherwise...keep them warm and hydrated...I know you've done this before...stick to the routine and let's see what we can do about the leg :please

Yes, the first thing I did was warm them up. I have the heating pad which stays on, and does not shut off. After they were nice and warm I fed them esbilac with a bt of whipping cream, they all urinated and are now In sound sleep.I know they are going to grow strong and heathy...I never dealt with a missing limb.I have amoxycilan just awaiting on the dosing.

dextersmom are you in Cedarhurst NY? Do you need someone to take these guys? If yes and yes, I'm in Orange co NY and could take them for you? I have a few vets who work with me for free on Squirrels so keep that in mind too.
Poor baby, otherwise they all look great
I am very worried about that leg. The redness is almost at the groin and the swelling all the way up. I suspect bone infection. He might need a vet to debride that, treat it, give some antibiotics we might not have at home like injectable and then oral.
They do look really plump and great, though, so that's good.

What an awesome offer, KCassidy! Thank you! I hope Dextersmom takes you up on it if this baby could possibly have a bone infection. I have heard they are very hard to treat.

If the bone needs to be debrided to remove infected material to save this baby you need an exotic specialist like "Dr. D" (PM). They have experience with administering anesthesia to such a small one and specialized surgery tools compared to a general vet. I use my general vet for his great pro-bono work on minor issues but for something specialized like this I would use Dr. Diaz or Emerson. Dr. D is comparable. I would be willing to chip in on a bill if necessary.

Sophie,
My vet has consulted with Dr. Emerson on more than one occasion and is a licensed rehabber herself. Who is Dr. D and where is he located, I've never heard of him.

Your vet sounds like a great vet for this then. I will PM you the name of the vet since it's NY and they may not want to advertise.

Did you get dosing help for antibiotics?
I will be off board late morning to sometime in the afternoon.
Others will be able to help. They just need to know the mg/strength
of the pill, the ab. that you have, and the weight of the squirrel in
grams.
What antibiotics do you have access to?
Do you have Clindamycin and Clavamox?
Will you be able to get this little one to a vet?

Thatbaby with the bad leg must be seen by a vet. It would not hurt to put on anti biotic while you wait. Please don't dose the antibiotic yourself. We can help. Bless you for taking this on,:grouphug

Can anyone take 4 babies to New Jersey from New York?
SophieSquirrel
03-22-2018, 01:54 PM
What's up with that baby? That poor little one needs a specialist to determine if it's necrotic or infected and treat accordingly and immediately. For a squirrel that size it can only be treated by a specialized knowledge and tools. If you can get just the one to Dr. D near you that would be the best thing. I am sure one of the Sr rehabbers in NY can help with transport to Dr D or Kcassidy in Orange County. Kcassidy also has a great vet that consults with Dr. E.

Any luck finding a ride to New Jersey?
Where in Jersey do they need to go?
Is there anyway that you can do part of the driving?

The coloring of the stub does look like bone. I had no idea Muggsy's tail's end was exposed bone. It wasn't pretty and white. It was dark brown like this baby's leg.
Muggsy didn't have that swelling, though. I can't wait to hear about this baby's prognosis. Sending hugs.

Dexter trying to get you on the phone. Please please call me back.
Hey Everyone. I have a transport person ready to drive from my area to the Bronx. I'm unsure where Dexter can drive to, or if she even can. She is in Cedarhurst. We need a ride from Dexters hands to my Finder at a meetup point in the Bronx. My Finder is ready to meet asap.
I have a vet appointment scheduled for 1130am tomorrow. I have Clindamycin, Clavamox and all the other AB's ready to use and this baby NEEDS the AB's ASAP.
Do we have anyone that could do the Long Island to Bronx run? Also as I said, I've tried calling DM 2x over the past 2 hours and haven't been able to reach her. :(
What do we need to do?
Thanks everyone. I really really really want to get a hold of this little man.

Everyone hold up here for a minute. What is needed is transport from Cedarhurst, NY to a destination in the Bronx to be decided by transporters or to Paramus, NJ. KCassidy has transport from the Bronx or Paramus to her, NOT the entire way. This is something that is needed asap due to medical issue of one of the babies.
The vet appointment is for 11am tomorrow morning if it is possible to get transport tonight.

I am putting out the word to some Long Island rehabbers to see if anyone has a transport person who can help. Cedarhurst is an hour from the Bronx, so if someone already lives out there near dextersmom it's a lot less driving for them than if someone has to go out there and then all the way back north toward the City.

I'm so sorry everyone, I kept trying to update you all, I also had to update about 5 other groups, while doctoring, feeding, not sleeping, working my job, feeding the horses, chickens, outdoor squirrels, etc.... ;) . I'm walking zombie right now and I need to feed the 10 again, but am forcing myself to get out updates to everyone. Thank you all for all the support and assistance.
DextersMom was going to meet one of my Finder/Transporters yesterday morning, but decided and thankfully, rightfully so, to drive the 4 up here Thursday night. She didn't follow my advice on driving directions (snort) so what should have been about a 1.5-2 hour ride turned into a 3+ hour ride with visits to Teaneck, NJ and all points elsewhere except here LOL. No clue how she and her daughter managed this, but it's okay I gave them some iPhone tutorials as well and showed them the iOS Map program. But i digress.
the other 3 are in good shape, she did good by them, but little man stumpy, who I think is actually Jack Sparrow (I'll no more as the day goes on, he's trying that name on for size he says) limb was an angry red and super swollen. First thing I did was give him Clndamycin and Tramadol.
Here are some pix of his leg upon arrival. What stuck out to me besides the redness was how shiny the skin was, I've seen that when someone has so much sweling that the skin is pulled as tight and taut and it makes it glossy.
299884 299885
Yesterday at the 9am feeding, I gave him his 2nd dose of Clinda/Tramadol but also took a video and pictures, his limb looked much more healthy pink and almost no red. It was a bit less swollen too.
299882
299881 .
299883
So the vet thinks his stump looks great. I showed her the intake pictures from above, as well as a short video. She confirmed there is a big difference after only 2 Clinda treatments.
The vet said no surgery for now, if it was infected and critical to survival, she would have, but since it looks somewhat healthy and Free of infection, she feels waiting is the best. Reasons for no surgery at this time are:
1. He is a neonate
2. His skin is thin. The sutures would rip right thru his skin.
3. He moves the limb around just like a normal leg so she feels the bone will continue to grow, if she pulls the skin over the end and gets it to stay closed, she thinks the bone would grow and eventual perforate again since the skin amount is limited.
So it is a keep doing what I’m doing kind of thing and a wait and see protocol :)
Here he is at the vet
299886
I'm putting Silvadine on the limb and around the skin edge of the scabbed stump. Vet doesn't want me putting ointment on the scab as she whats that hardened piece to stay there for as long as it can.
I’m thrilled!! I have him separated from the others but did put the runt of another litter in with him so he isn’t completely alone. Also he is sleeping on my chest every night. Since he is going to be with me forever I thought I'd start working on a really strong bond.
I'll get a few new pictures of him now while feeding.
Thanks for all the help everyone.
We need to give a big SHOUTOUT to DextersMom for sucking it up and getting him to me Thursday night. I really think getting the Clinda into him Thurs night instead of Friday afternoon was a life saving difference. I can't drive at night anymore so more power to her and her daughter for making that trip up starting at 830pm
Good Job Dex and Dex Daughter!

GREAT job with the treatment and Cli dosing! Do you have any FV LA-200 for post antibiotic use? Bonding for a permanent NR is a good idea. Keep us posted as he grows!
