Noticed that one of the squirrels in small wooded area near my apt. was dragging itself around by it's front legs yesterday evening. Spoke to someone who feeds them every day and he said it happened a few days ago?? The squirrel is very mobile and apparently will eat shucked peanuts. I did not see him this morning, but will check again on my way home from work. I do not know what to do to get this poor squirrel medical attention- I am assuming he needs it! If anyone knows of someone who can help him, please let me know.

we have a couple of rehabbers in NY, hopefully one will be on here soon. Do you think you could catch this squirrel?

Please give us a general area of NY so we can help you find a rehabber.

concerned citizen, I will send you a private message with some info. If you can catch him there is one place in NYC who may treat him.

Island rehabber had given me a few places- I am located in NYC in the east village. I don't have any experience catching animals, so ultimately if there was someone who could come get him that would be the best. Understand this is probably highly unlikely....

Concerned Citizen - wrapping the lil fuzzer in a bath towel (squirrel burrito) might be the way to "catch" the fuzzer and put him in a pet carrier or cardboard box with a little bowl of water and some filberts or almonds or pecans. That would work easily for a day or two until a rehabber can come and get him/her.
Some risk of a bite or scratch BUT squirrels do not carry rabies - almost unheard of. I have been bitten a number of times by our wild fuzzers w/o even a minor infection.
Thanks for caring - TSB is here to help you !!

Hi. I can at least let you know that the squirrel was taken to a vet yesterday afternoon by a woman who feeds the squirrels in that private park. I'm afraid that's all I know for now, but I gave my numbers to the security guard who told me this, and explained that there are people who would love to know about the squirrel. There are a number of excellent exotics vets in New York City, so if the squirrel can be helped, he has a good chance. Also, the private park is a very nice one, and all the squirrels there appeared well-fed, so at least this injured squirrel had food, and didn't have to deal w/the usual urban hazards. Concerned citizen left for a vacation yesterday, but I'll let her know as well.
I'm sorry I didn't get IR's message about this before yesterday (my fault)...

newyorker - thanks for the update - so glad to hear the lil cutie was not left to the risks of being on the ground with only two legs functioning.

I wish I had better news, but I learned that this poor squirrel had to euthanized. The woman who took him to the vet said he didn't appear to be in pain, so that's something...

Thanks for the update, though sad. Nevertheless, because of people who cared (and acted!) :Love_Icon this poor squirrel at least was helped to a peaceful death at the hands of a vet, and not left for predators (or bored kids) to torment. Poor baby is at least not left to suffer. :grouphug
