This is freaking me out! I have maybe 7 week female squirrel someone brought me last week. She had some bumpy skin on her head but could not se en anything visually even when bathed and wet. This week it seems like the rough bumpy patches have quadrupled and now a large patch of skin with fur is peeling back off her head! Has anyone seen this before?299429299432299431299430

I’ve never seen that before. I hope others have a better idea of what’s going on. In the meantime put a little antibiotic salve, like neosporin or polysporin, on the raw area of her skin.

What is the story of where he came from? Was there an injury near where this is happening?

Im afraid her fur on her whole head is going to peel up.

Do you have antibiotics? Clavamox and SMZ specifically.

There is another thread where the skin fell off in a much more severe way. I spoke to the poster and she used Clavamox and SMZ together as well as silvadene cream with insulin topically.

It looks like there is a infection under the skin. I would do warm compresses and gently go in circular motion. You will want that skin to come off so you can treat the new skin with Silver sulfadiazine cream. I gave Girlfriend two antibiotics. Clavamox and SMZ. Warm compress twice a day. Small carrier that you can open the top and clean blankets twice a day .

Can you smell anything? A baby came from a local vets office—lethargic, really sick—and he smelled. Turned out he had an abscess that creeped under the skin. Couldn’t see or feel anything. All the skin from shoulder to shoulder sloughed off. He was put on Clindidrops. He’s good as gold now and just itching to go out as soon as there are some leaves.

Thank you, someone said it was a nasty bacterial infection, wow it spread fast. Her whole skin is peeling back. I started her on clavimox, will look on the other board to see photos of the other person who dealt with this and see what she did. I got in touch with a squirrl guru and she diagnosed it immediately and told me what to do. Now I know if I take in a little one and they have any bumps I will start them immediately and not wait and watch. Was thinking she just got scratched and it was scabbed up but couldn't see anything. Thank you!

What is SMZ a sulfa drug? Already did put her and her brother in a different cage and will keep everything cleaned, so her skin will peel like a burn and then just place sulfadiazine cream on it with no dressing? Oh, her brothers lip pealed this morning also, so I started him on the same treatment and they are in the kennel together. Will give both the same treatment. His under his eye was gooky yesterday so I cleaned him and did a warm compress and started him on trimeth right away, now switched him to clavamox.

No odor, I could feel what felt like eczema on a person, could not see anything when separating the fur though. I even gave her a bath the first night i got her and looked with nothing visible. No it has spread like crazy. glad to know what it is and how to treat! Thank you!

Trimeth is smz so give both together. Clavamox and smz. Who did your dosing for you? We need to be sure its right especially if used stacked together.

Just a friendly reminder, clean up well after handling those precious muffins. Your hands and work space. Hope the infection stops spreading. Sloughing skin is a surprise you never want!

Thank you Sammys Mom, A 20 year amazing rehabber dosed it. .08cc 2 times a day, I started her brother on the same, he is having the same issues around his mouth and is not able to suck. He can swallow so I have to go slow and get his nutrition in him. I would love a double check and dosing on the trimeth. I would also love the medication calculations if someone can send them. I can do the dosing if I have it. Thank you all so much!

No they don't give us the bottle just a pill to crush and mix. That is what I was told.

The little girl is doing good so far, her fur looks bad but she is energetic and eating great. Unfortunately her brother died last night, he had it on his face around his mouth and in his mouth possible in his throat and lungs. This is a nasty one. Bummed! RIP

These are pictures of Thomas and Tilly just before Thomas passed away. Then there is a photo of just Tilly after I found all the bumps spreading and gave her a bath to see if I could actually see anything, before I could she wiggled around and her skin peeled up. the photo with arrows are areas of full thickness skin peel and 1-2 layers only. She is doing amazing though, has tons of energy and playful and eating! 299547299548299542299543299546299544299545

So sorry for your little guy, and you.

The tissue is a nice pink color and looks like it has the potential to heal well. Keep on keeping on and we're here when you need us! Take photos as it heals, I'd love to see it's progression.

I'm not a rehabber, but my curiosity is if it's possible to part the fur in such a way to see the color of the skin? If there is a skin rash, I suspect the appearance of the rash might be a hint. Again, I'm not a rehabber so others can overrule me if this is a bad idea. I am a pre-medical student for what that's worth. I hope the girl makes it!

No visible rash under the fur, yes you would think so but I could not. I even wet her down because a lot of times you can see better that way. The skin was not red as you would think.

I wonder if this could be epidermolysis bullosa? Here's a link to symptoms in dogs. If so, a squirrel friendly vet might be able to recommend treatment. If it is that, part of the solution will be to be extremely gentle.

FYI - I made a post in the nutrition section with this thread in mind: https://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?59965-Collagen

Again, I'm not a rehabber so don't listen to me if a vet or expert says otherwise. I'm trying to help but my knowledge is limited.

In humans, I have also seen drugs such as levamisole cause skin to peel off and fall off. I wonder if there's any way these babies could have gotten into something like that? If so, I'm thinking that the treatment would be something like antibiotics and silvadone cream which has already been suggested. Again, I'm a pre-med, and underqualified, so I hope others will jump in. I would also like an update. It is wonderful that someone is trying to help this poor thing!
