New here, have about 6 week old baby that had been brought in buy the cats. Trying to find a rehaber in my area... in the meantime trying to keep the little guy healthy. I don’t have any milk replacement is there a quick formula i can use just for tonight? Seemed to be drinking water & consuming fruit and veg, but reading tonight he still needs to getting milk. He hasn’t had any, was found last night. Just don’t want him to get dehydrated. I know kitten replacemer is a no go, have cream yogurt & & whole milk in the house but lotsa conflicting info out there. TY

Wal-Mart normally carries Mayenburg goat milk. If you can get either the the fresh or the powder some one can help you mix it with the cream and yogurt. Do you have a 1cc syringe to feed with? You are going to need antibiotics for him also. Did the cat leave scratches or wounds of any kind?

Have you been able to contact a rehabber? Or have you gotten the goatmilk?

He should be hydrated prior to feeding food, as long as you have done that he needs to eat if he hasn't in 24 hours. The goat's milk formula is as follows:

3 part goats milk (liquid or powder but reconstitute the powder into liquid before making)
1 part full fat vanilla yogurt
1 part heavy whipping cream.

Make sure baby is warm, formula is heated and feed with a syringe. The amount is based on weight in grams. 5% of his body weight or 0.05 x wt in grams = ml's to feed. Frequency depends on how old he is, or how big he is but you can start with every 3 hours. You must stimulate him to pee and poop at every feeding. Some prefer before, some after eating and some both. Use a paper towel or cotton ball and be gentle while dabbing or stroking until you elicit urine/stool.

Is he bald, does he have fur.

Yes he will need antibiotics if he has been punctured or scratched by the cat. What do you have on hand?

Here's a helpful site for your set up and feeding tips: https://www.henryspets.com/baby-squirrel-care/

It's six pages, look through them all and thank you for helping this little one. As always, keep him warm, up high and away from small children and pets.

You can also use Esbilac Puppy with Probiotics at Petco, Petsmart & Walmart, all the rehabbers use it without issue. Make sure the baby is warm and hydrated before feeding formula. Pinch the skin and if it does not fall back into place you have a dehydrated baby.

Post some photos please

Here are detailed instructions. Skip the part about trying to re-unite with mom, that's probably not going to happen at this stage.

Here is another good one. Just keep clicking next page to read all the instructions. https://www.henryspets.com/baby-squirrel-care/

You can get 1 mL syringes from any pharmacy without the needles. Tell them it's for feeding a baby animal. Get the 1 mL, not the 3 mL or the "baby bottle" nursing kits.

ONLY use this one

I was able to get the goat milk, cream and yogurt, & had a 1cc syringe. He really didn’t seem to want anything to do with it, have tried a couple of times, but no luck. I will try to weigh him in the Morning & have a better idea about his age. I have observed him holding a piece of avocado & a broccoli tidbit to eat, which i was told was a good sign.

Fortunately there are no scratches or wounds, thank goodness, and isn’t very happy being held, I didn’t want to stress him too much. I spoke to a couple of squirrel rehabbers, no luck yet in finding him a place, but have a few more people to contact tomorrow morning. . Thank you for the quick response!!! I’ll will post our progress tomorrow.

Well perhaps you can raise him yourself if unable to place. A lot of professional advice on here. If no luck with the goats milk try the Esbilac.

Sorry Cava I didn't see you posted the Henry's link (dup), I was in a rush to feed my squirrels.

Scratches from the cat you would see but punctures you might not on five to six week old squirrel. The problem with being cat caught is their saliva can be anywhere on the squirrel and that is what makes the squirrel sick. My opinion is it would still be best to treat with antibiotics.

Make sure you try to keep him hydrated. A bowl of water might work. Try apple juice, grapes, orange.

I'm sorry I didn't read your original post well enough. I was under the impression when I suggested you get the goat's milk formula that you had a baby baby and that you'd be getting him/her to a rehabber tomorrow and you needed a formula to tide you over and since he didn't eat formula since last night that he needed something asap. I didn't to recommend Esbilac because you have to work your way up to full strength.

If you choose to raise him by yourself, you can use Esbilac but should dilute it a bit when you first start to use it. They tend to really like the Fox Valley 20/50 which you can order at Henry's healthy pets and he is a proper age for it. If you keep him yourself, you'll have to handle him for feedings. He will not be old enough to go begin the release process until at least 16 weeks.

Hopefully someone will take him tomorrow, but if not he will need to be on formula until he is weans himself many weeks from now and he shouldn't be eating anything but a rodent block after that and before other solids. It provides the required nutrition to help him grow and keeps him from getting a condition called Metabolic Bone disease. But a baby this age needs formula, well before blocks.

Also, since he is older it may take a few tries. Keep it quiet, him bundled up and the formula warm.

Keep up the good work. Keep trying with the Goats milk formula until you find out if you're keeping him and/or pick up some of the commercial formula.
