I have a 1 yr. old squirrel, Tigger, who is the light of my life and makes me laugh every day!! His latest antic has me perplexed...he has a chinchilla wheel for running. He will NOT run in his wheel unless he is holding a nut, preferably pecan, in his mouth why he runs..why on earth???? Never had a fuzzy sweetie pie do this before. Just very curious. Love to all!

Maybe that is just one more way to express - that every single squirrel, fuzz-butt and human is absolutely unique and wonderful in their/our own perfect way. Maybe I should try jogging with a nut in my mouth, just to see if it has any appeal for me. :Love_Icon:grin2

My flying squirrel Laz insists on running in his wheel with a nut in his mouth as well. His house is in the hall just outside my bedroom and boy don't I love it when he drops that damned nut inside the spinning wheel at about 3AM. Sounds like someone is shaking rocks in a coffee can in my bedroom doorway!

Thanks guys, at least someone else has seen this before. It is so cute but I was afraid that it had some "hidden squirrel meaning" that I was not aware of!!! Love to all and have a great and squirrely weekend!:

Yes, but the nut is his ultimate treat. Perhaps you should be jogging with a hot fudge sundae or half a NY cheesecake clenched in your mouth instead.
Pics please. :grin2

Running with a nut in their mouth is simply part of being a squirrel. And though they aren't gett'in anywhere on that wheel, to them it feels like they are absconding with a nut, "Mine mine mine!", to put it in a special spot to retrieve later, or enjoy it up in the tree undisturbed. And though for squirrels this is not unique, it is innovative, which they excel at! Our squirrels in the morning would run around on the inside sides of their large 8 ft long cage, like it was a huge wheel, which sounded like thunder!
(To the tune of "I enjoy being a girl!" from "Flower Drum Song".) 'They enjoy being a squirrel !'
