View Full Version : E-coli infected romaine lettuce, effects on squirrels?
I am wondering if squirrels are susceptible to the same symptoms and illness as humans or if their digestive tract has some glorious special bacteria that protects them from it?
And should we be pulling romaine lettuce from their diet?

Squirrels are as susceptible to the bad effects of e. coli bacteria as any other living thing....I would avoid romaine for a good long while because of this. My squirrels never want to eat it, anyway -- surprised that so many do. I always have it because I love Ceasar salad, but the squees never want to share it with me. :dono

Romaine -??--I have no idea.
Our CREW eats it every day...that and two types of culantro ( cilantro).
They are GREEN-fanatics.

That is what comes with ground grown greens and ground water contamination. Ground greens grown hydroponically don't have this issue.
Check out Dublin GA for hydroponic lettuce source:

To add protection against E coli and Aspergillus fungus contamination in the diet, I recommend two products from my own science diet be included daily in the diet of squirrels in captive care. One is Pet Flora by Safer Medical of MT. that contains a soil based organism source (probiotic wtih a prebiotic source of leonardite, that contain Humic and Fulvic acids that are both anti viral and anti bad bacterial. 1/64 Tsp daily is noted in my diet.

Also Alfatoxin test strips.
The second product also available on Amazon.com is Organic Milk Thistle Seed Elixer from Wild Harvest of Oregon. Milk Thistle Seed is perhaps the only known source to combat a hit to the liver from alfatoxins from fungus, and mycotoxins from toxic poisonous mushrooms. It is recommended by veterinarians, and has bee prescribed for pets. This source has saved many a dog from death. One tiny drop equal to no more than 1/64 Tsp. for maintenance support.
