Hey everyone. I'm going on a cruise next week that I got tickets for months ago and am coming to terms with the fact that the adult grey I've been rehabbing will not be able to be released anytime soon. We have centers here in Houston but in my experience the wildlife centers are perhaps a little to quick to turn to euthanasia. My girl would have definitely been euthanized had I taken her there because of her head trauma and malocclusion. She's made incredible improvement with medicine and some teeth trimming. She's now eating solid foods but I'm still worried if I took her to a center she would end up euthanized because the malocclusion is not resolved. I would love if someone could just keep her for a week. I've got an incubator and everything she could need. Willing to drive pretty far. Please let me know if you might be able to help
Well, I'm in Kentucky but keep bumping your thread for those who don't get on daily. I'll bet you'll get a sitter in no time!
Sure you can't drive to Virginia? I'd squirrel sit in a heartbeat! Hope someone close to you sees your post soon.

Has anyone ever had to go out of town before while caring for an animal? Would you guys consider asking a friend to watch them or is that too much of a stretch?

Someone without squirrel experience and a special needs squirrel? Ehhh... Last resort.
I sent you a PM.

Search the board for "Texas" brought this thread up. Maybe if you reach out to one of the members mentioned here they could help.

The malocclusion is not likely to resolve, if she's truly malocclusion needing teeth trimming, she is already non-releasable.
Unfortunately I do agree with your outlook on wildlife facilities and many are too quick to euthanize but in all fairness
wildlife facilities are there to (supposedly )rehabilitate, raise, release. Not house non-releasable, your girl wouldn't stand a chance. :(
I hope you find a willing sitter on such short notice, I also hope you have a plan B.
When you get back I'd work on being a forever home or finding a forever home,
with malocclusion their survival depends on continued human intervention.
Hope you find a sitter. :great

I know it's not likely to resolve. I am just hopeful that I can train her teeth to align with continual trimmings.

Hmmmmmm—aren’t the Skuls near Houston? Their health problems likely would prevent them caring for your baby but they may know someone. Anyone have their contact info? My son lives in Killeen. Bet he’d take care of her. He has dogs but I think there’s an extra bedroom. I’ll ask if you want. He is NOT a rehabilitator but has cared for raccoons and other wildlife before passing them on to rehabbers.

I knew a rehabber in TX once who helped some NRs, yet I think they are now retired. Some rehabbers, though not all, will help NRs and even give them a forever home, yet their code is very strict in TX. with zero tolerance for NR squirrels cared for in captivity. To me it is barbaric, as any Vet not associated with fish and wildlife will tell you, if an animal is ables to function and have a good quality of life, not in pain or depressed, why not then support it in captivity, who does it hurt really? Sadly some rehabbers who operate in fear of losing their licence, say that have to allow some to die that do fine even handicapped so that they can help others. BOSH!! If the code weren't what it is that wouldn't be the case for many, and they know it.

We all wish that could be the case, it's not impossible but extreamly rare when that does happen.
