I have just noticed my boy trying to not use his front right paw, while walking. I went to get a closer look and he has swollen pinkish-red sore toe(s). I'm not sure if one of his brothers bit him or if it can go away on its own, or if it will need more help. if anyone has any clues what it is or how I can help him please let me know. Thank you

I bet you almost anything that you have a pinch point somewhere on the cage - where two bars are close enough together that a toe can slide in and get stuck. As soon as they feel themselves being "trapped" this way they will YANK and hurt themselves. Look where the bars meet on the corners of the cage - they are notorious. Wen you find it you need to either pull the gap apart so it is too wide to be an issue, or wrap something around it like a strip of fleece to close the gap.

If you have a weight on your squirrel someone here can prescribe the correct dosage of Infant Ibuprophen. It is a sweet syrup and they usually even like the taste.

I am not sure if I can get a weigh, he is still wild and doesn't like to sit still for long! haha even with his hurt toe. But thank you so much I will go,in and check the cage immediately.

I got a closer pic and I don't think that it is from, the cage.

If you're using a cage that can be broken down or the sides aren't welded together you'll likely have pinch points in the corners. Here's a step up cage I use that has fleece cut into strips and wrapped around the corners. Works wonders.

That almost looks like a callus.

Question: is the toe actually swollen, with this pink lesion on top, or is the toe OK but the pink lesion is growing out of it? We need to rule out squirrel pox here, which usually starts on the feet. Early detection is the key to complete cure.

It is his two toes, they are pinkish and swollen and towards the claw looks dark and real sore.

how do I help it if it is a lesion?

Look him over REALLY closely to see if you see anything else on him.

I still am tending to think this is something caused externally - a cage pinch point or even a scuffle with his brother. I have never seen a squirrel with pox limping from lesions. I have seen them have problems holding food but just because their little paws were so misshapen, not from soreness.

I agree it is most likely NOT pox....just want to be extra extra sure.

I do not see anything else on him, I believe it is externally caused as well. I'm not sure what he weighs but I know baby ibuprofen will help, I'm just not, sire how much to give him!

If you post a full body picture of him next to something of a known size we can help you guesstimate his weight in order to dose the Infant Motrin.
