How important / how often should non-releasable squirrels be taken to the vet for an overall wellness checkup? My Maeve is just reaching 5 months old and I've been thinking about brining her in for a wellness check to make sure she's in good health and hopefully spot any problems she may have early. :w00t She's never been seen by a vet before.

Do you suspect a problem with your squirrel? Many folks with squirrels don’t have access to a vet for a variety of reasons, so there is no set time for a wellness check up. If you have a knowledgeable squirrel vet a wellness check-up isn’t a bad idea provided it doesn’t stress your squirrel. It also isn’t a necessity, and may be very upsetting for your squirrel. The only way to definitively know your squirrel isn’t suffering from metabolic bone disease or other ailments, will require an X-ray or blood work to be done, so be prepared for the costs.

If she is not having any issues that concern you, if she is bright eyed, alert, active, healthy, proper weight with normal teeth and being given a healthy diet (rodent blocks, veggies with nuts only for treats) then general checkups are really not needed. Vet visits can be extremely stressful for a squirrel.

Are there any issues with her that are concerning you?
