One of our released squirrels from the spring at the nature center -- either Regina's or mine -- showed up with a horrible abcess or growth under her chin last Thursday. She was so weak that Regina's hubby was able to shoo her right into an empty enclosure with the promise of food. After getting a couple of good meals and some fresh water she perked up, but the thing under her chin is serious. I tried medicating her for three days using Clindamycin on a walnut, but the growth was only even larger after that. I've got an appt this morning with Dr John Pisciotta, the only other squirrel vet around here that I trust, now that Dr Pilny's gone to LA. Prayers requested that this is a 'simple' abcess that can be lanced and drained and not something terminal.....:please

Praying for this beautiful baby... Once she has the abscess lanced, I have had very good luck with Clavamox even in the wild.

Those TSB prayers are so powerful......thank you everyone! Good/bad news on little Abbie, the abcess squirrel. Dr JP saw her this morning, probed the giant thing, and said it appears to be a 'simple abcess' and he's not overly concerned. Bad news: He was so jammed up today and they are closing early for Halloween, so I have to bring her back Thursday am for surgery. He was sweet enough to at least see her for me. Wonderful doc! Abbie got loose in his office and neither he nor the tech could get her...she must be one of mine because I did. https://www.facebook.com/images/emoji.php/v9/faa/1.5/16/1f603.png

Just what you want to do on your days off.
Glad it looks positive though.
I'll bet she's one of yours! :blowkiss

Prayers Have Been Answered!!!

Abbie's surgery went well and she's all cleaned up and ready to go. Got a shot of Covenia, even though Dr JP was cautionary because it moves thru small mammals' systems a lot faster than we want it to and does not have the long-term effectiveness in squirrels that it has in dogs and cats. BUT at least we won't have to medicate her twice a day in the release cage for a couple of days :shakehead :shark :rotfl
Whew, that's a sigh of relief I bet! Glad to hear that she was able to have it taken care of so quickly.
