I am on the way to pick up a squirrel way out in the country. The lady called me scared of it but said it had been attacked by a cat and has a cut around it’s head. I help a friend who is a wild life rehabber. She is on vacation and there are no vets anywhere around us open on Saturday. What kind of antibiotics can I give the squirrel and can someone please post any kind of dosage charts. I know I have flagyl and maybe amoxicillin pills at home. With no vets open and no other rehabbers available I don’t know what to do. I have silvadene at home & neosporin. I know the squirrel won’t make it Monday when a vet opens to get antibiotics. I want to help it until vets open on Monday.

See if you can get some cipro or augmentin (human) or baytril or clavamox (veterinary). We will need the strength of the tablet and can then help breaking down and dosing

I have amoxicillin 875 mg, biaxin 500, flagyl 500 mg. Those are the only antibiotics I have. She is a full grown female squirrel she has milk which means she has babies somewhere. Her injuries are pretty bad. She laid outside for over 8 hours before I was notified. She has bite marks behind her left ear, bleeding from the mouth, and I haven’t got her home to clean her and check for other injuries. She is in shock and not moving much. She has moments where she tries to jump & run but falls on her side shaking. I am doing everything I can and praying. I usually have a vet (Monday through Friday) or rehabber (she is on vacation & I am not getting an answer straight to voicemail). Any advice at all can help. I want to get this momma squirrel back to Health and to her babies.

PLEASE look for the appropriate antibiotics, but in the meantime,
I can dose the amoxi.
The only safe antibiotic that I know of for a nursing mom is Clavamox or Augmentin.

Can you guesstimate her weight? OR post a photo?

Nancy, I am pretty darn certain amoxicillin is OK for nursing moms but Augmentin/Clavamox is probably a better choice. I hope the finders are on the look-out and listening as well for the babies!

Did you think to let the lady that called you know to to watch and listen for the babies?

Thanks Spanky. Of course amoxi is safe if clavamox is safe, (since it amoxicillian and clavulinic acid.)
Why did I write that? :dono
Yes the better option is definitely Clavamox or Augment.

Edit: I just sent her an email with a link to this thread telling her
we are here to try to help her. I hope she comes back on soon.

I let the lady know what the distress call sounds like for baby squirrels and let her know to please call me if she hears or sees babies.

I let her hear what a baby squirrel distress call sounds like off you tube and told her please call me if she hears it or sees little babies. I am worried sick that the babies don’t have her to keep them warm and hasn’t eaten all day. I pray I hear from her. I have nursed lots of babies but never had a full grown injured mother squirrel.

The squirrel had 100’s of maggots matted in its fur behind its head. I have gotten all of them off with a q tip, cleaned all the cuts & punctures, and put some silvadene cream on the wounds. Breaks my heart but she keeps having seizures. I called vets that are over 2 hours from me and their only reply is put her down. I have been sitting with her praying she pulls through and worried about the babies. I warmed up a thick soft tee shirt and some rice in a sock. I am trying to keep her warm. Any advice to help with this sweet girl would be appreciated. The seizures scare me and I want nothing more than to get her well and back to her babies

Sweet thing. Don't forget the basics: heating pad set on low (if you have one), dark quiet room, very little stimulation, if you don't know how long she's been injured put a bit of syrup, honey or karo syrup on her gums...not enough for her to swallow since she probably can't and most importantly, healing energy and love. Are you still waiting on dosage calculations for the amoxi?

You may want to treat her with Capstar for the maggots. If they are outside, they may be inside as well. Sending prayers.

Did you see where Spanky offered to help? If you have fleece or flannel to put under and around her it will hold the warmth better than the towels....
