Help needed with flyer's penis

I am very concerned, but since I don’t know what normal looks like, don’t know if I have a serious issue or not.
My little flying squirrel, his penis was extending out quite far and the tip red with thin yellowish tiny smaller diameter thread like piece extending from middle. I don’t know if this is a blockage that should be pulled out or an actual anatomicalpart of his body. I am not certain if sucking going on by him or his sister. I don’t know if the length is it extending farther than should. Need immediate guidance.

Honestly, I know nothing about flyers. Sorry. I do know that self sucking or sibling sucking will cause the penis to elongate and develop a small blood blister at the tip. You need to be sure that the little guy is able to urinate ok. My grey squirrels penis use to inflate like a balloon, even though there was no scab on the end. I would have to gently express it. It eventually resolved itself.

Until someone that knows more about flyers responds, don’t pick at the thing extending from the penis. Just be sure he can pee ok. If you see a blockage then apply a warm cotton ball to remove any scab.

Anne, I would watch closely to find out who is doing this. It might be the sister. It might be him self-suckling. Either way, it can become life threatening. If it's the sister I would separate them until this is resolved. If it's him, I would make a long shirt for him out of a baby sock.

Coating the penis with a sugar paste is the treatment for this. It will help shrink the tissues. I would NOT pull anything out of this. I really don't know if this is the case with flyers or even babies but adult grey squirrels have a bone in the penis. I will include a pic of that.

If this becomes life threatening you might need to take him to a vet. If he can't pee it is life threatening. You are 62 miles (about an hour) from the best squirrel vet in the country. (Dr.Emerson at Ravenwood Animal Clinic in Port Orange).

This is the X-ray of an adult grey squirrel. You can clearly see the bone. I don't know if the same is true of flyers BUT I wouldn't be pulling anything out. You might also want to send a Private Message to Anne. :) She is a licensed rehabber in FL and is a flyer expert. She can help you. Seriously, her user name is Anne.
