Friends found what I think is a young ground squirrel. Black marks on sides...none on head. It was cold & lethargic. I warmed it & gave it some or pedilyte. It's dragging it's back end. Rear legs seem paralyzed. I only have kitten milk replacement on hand...no puppy formula. Will kmr hurt it? Also clean & stimulated it but no pee or poop yet. It doesn't want to eat any more....just wants to burrow & sleep. Not sure what I can do to help it? About 4 to 5 inches long with upper & lower incisors. Any help appreciated.

Some things you are going to need if you plan on helping the sqirrel your self:

A large deep plastic tub to keep him in for a while. It's a safe place for them to be. Drill holes in the top of the bin for air to get in.

Powdered Esbilac Puppy Formula with pre and pro biotics. This and the Fox Valley 20/50 are the formulas that are used for Squirrels. Esbilac you can usually find at Petco, some people say they can get it at Wal-Mart. Fox Valley has to be ordered on line.

Small 1cc and 3cc syringes. Needed for safely feeding and giving medication if needed. Sometimes if you ask at your pharmacy they can give you one or two. That will be enough to get you started. I forgot to look if you are in a "sqirrel safe" state or not. If you aren't, tell them you need it to medicate a puppy or kitten.

A heating pad that does not shut off automatically. You'll be placing it under half of the tub so the squirrel can move on and off the heat as needed.

A kitchen scale that weighs in grams. How much to feed is figured by the weight of the squirrel. So is medication dosing. Wal-Mart also usually has these.


They love to snuggle up in fleece but for now any type of t-shirt or flannel that his nails won't get caught on will work.

Hopefully they will come back on.

Please take the towel out, and put something in like fleece,
or an old nightgown, cut up into ~ 12x12 square pieces. They love
to burrow under. A deep tuppenware bin WITH a top, with TONS of small holes drilled
in is perfect.

I called one of the re-habers from my area on list -they said call the SPCA. I checked on him every few hrs last night but this morning he is gasping and eyes are glazed over. He is almost gone. I wish I could help him on his way -but I don't know how. Sadly I think he had injuries greater than food and rest could help with and beyond my means to save him. Sorry little red - I tried. Thank you everyone that took the time to help me. :-( :sadness

Thank you Nancy. I get so sad and frustrated when an animal arrives in my life (usually in mysterious ways) and I am unable to help it - heal it . And I hate to see any animal suffer. So sad.
