View Full Version : Why is my baby so runty looking
Pocket

I received a baby that still had it's umbilical dot. This was September 20th.
I'm feeding her puppy formula every hour to hour 1/2, to 2 hours.
Sometimes she eats every hour 1cc, sometimes she won't eat but will at 2 hours.
I've been scrolling through pictures of other babies her age and mine seems so runty. I'm using the esbilac puppy formula like I've read but, she isn't as plump as others I've seen.
She's peeing and pooping fine. I have her in a box heated at between 98* to 100*, she has room to move to hotter or cooler areas.
Is there a homemade recipe I can use to get her plumper?

Is the Esbilac the powdered puppy formula listed below?
She looks a little bloated from the picture.
Can you post one of her tummy?
Is this your first squirrel?
Take a look at this link. It's 6 pages long with the next button at the top right.

How much does she weigh?
What size syringe are you using?
Please do NOT feed her every 1/2 hour - 2 hours.
They need to be on a schedule, not just randomly feeding.
At this age, she should go for about 3 hours between feedings.
Once we have a weight on her we will tell you how much to feed at each feeding.
Do you stimulate her?
If you have her in a cardboard box, take her out, they dehydrate easily in cardboard.
You will need a plastic bin with tons of air holes and a heating pad set on low, on the OUTSIDE of the
container, only half way under so she doesn't overheat. Put lots of fleece or anything that she can burrow
under or get up higher if she gets too warm. Just make sure that she can't crawl out of the bin.
Go to the link I suggested and you will see a bin with air holes and the heating pad half under.
It's an excellent link.

He looks just like another baby we had a few weeks ago. If you are feeding liquid Esbilac from a can then that is the reason he looks like she does. This is the only Esbilac you can feed baby squirrels. See below. However, now he will need something more digestible. Let us know more detail. How often are you feeding, how much. How much does she weigh?
Are you feeding the powdered Esbilac like this?

Thinking the same, Nancy.
Any updates on this little baby? How is he?
