Are aspen shavings and living world's "fresh n comfy" bedding safe? I was hoping to be able to use both and see which she prefers to pee in, and then put that one in a litter box and the other one on the bottom of her cage. She doesn't actually spend much time on the bottom of her cage anyway, she is usually far too busy running in her wheel or swinging from the toys and things hanging in her cage. I have been using fleece up until now, but with her new big cage she had to be moved into my room and I'm hoping to keep it low odour. The cage is 4'x4'x2' and she is an 8 week old red squirrel that weighs 135-140g. I will be keeping her until spring. Will I need to trim her teeth? She has antler and plenty of branches and things to chew on.

I always use Carefresh bedding and love it.

No you won't need to trim her teeth, if she has lots to chew on.
Just to be on the safe side, check her teeth periodically.
Sometimes when these babies come to us, it's from a fall out of a tree.
We have to watch for problems down the line with alignment.

Ditto what Nancy said -- CareFresh is a godsend as far as odor control goes....I coudn't rehab without it anymore!

As a rule, you don't want to use any aromatic bedding with rodents. That includes aspen, cedar, or pine shavings. They apparently can irritate rodent respiratory systems. They are also not anywhere near as absorbent as CareFresh. :grin2

I'll also say that the CareFresh works great. I have two deer mice and only need to do a complete bedding change every two weeks! Virtually no smell!:great

Oh wow it works that well eh? I think the living world stuff is similar so I will try that until I get some carefresh. Luckily I know that my baby didn't fall from a tree. I got her when she was 2-3 weeks old because her mother was either removing her from the nest, or she was moving the whole litter and tried to carry her across a deck with a cat on it. The cat spooked mom and she ran off leaving the baby, and the cat then gingerly picked up baby "Beensy" and proudly presented her to the owner (our neighbor at camp). We tried for 2 days to get mom to take her back by leaving her where she had been left in a little bin with a bean bag that I reheated when I offered her water every couple hours. Mom never came back , so now I'm the new momma :) She has gone from 35g- to 140g since I've had her! So crazy- we didn't even think she would make it through the first night. Now she has a fan club of people in our campground cheering for her and asking what they can put out for her when she is released in the spring! She has got it made, practically celebrity squirrel status LOL :rotfl
