View Full Version : Question about wild squirrel and the approaching hurricane

We have a very friendly younger female wild squirrel who comes daily for nuts. She has a drey across the street in a neighbors palm tree. She jumps on us and takes the nut and will even sit on my husbands shoulder while she eats it. Never aggressive with anyone. No babies, she's never been pregnant.

My question.... how traumatized would she be if we coaxed her into the release cage before this hurricane hit and provided her a nice secure nest box to hunker down in and weather out the storm? Would this be worse than letting her fend for herself during the storm? She has periodically gotten in our nest boxes near the release cage, but never set up home.

We intend to bring Peeps into the house before the storm. Unfortunately, we don't see Nibbs very often, so I question that he will be here for us to bring him in as well. He's not nearly as friendly as a Peeps.

Hey Mel, you have no idea how high the storm surge will be or power of this storm.. I think if you shut her in a cage, there is a high likelihood of Injury or drowning. I am scared for you guyes on the barrier island. Can you catch her and bring her in or let her fend for herself.:grouphug

No release cage is going to withstand this kind of storm.

I totally agree, and if I'm not mistaken, it's built around a tree as well. :eek
Stay safe and thanks for watching out for all the littles.
We will be praying for all of you.:Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon

Threadjack here.
TerriCompro, how are you. I'm so happy to see you on the board.
Is everything ok down there after the hurricane?
Missed you! :blowkiss

Aw, jeez, what a NIGHTMARE the whole thing was. Even though our damage was minimal by comparison (just downed trees, limbs, debris everywhere), and we're FINE, we still had to PREPARE like it was a Cat 4 (because you just don't KNOW what's going to happen) and that is an exhausting ordeal. We were without power only for a few days, and we were lucky to have found a generator, so it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Our windows are still boarded up, because (a) my husband has been sick, and (b) we've got Maria out there following the same path (last I checked), so we're in a holding pattern.

The night the hurricane was coming, I boiled water and put it in a thermos so that I'd have hot water for the morning feeding (which worked great). Then we got the generator on and I was able to boil water in the microwave. A day or so later, without warning, the power went out again, and there I was with a little one to feed and no way to heat up the formula except tap water, which wasn't really hot enough, but we made it work. We hadn't named this one yet when the storm was approaching, so Will suggested Irma. I imagine there are a lot of little baby squirrels named Irma right about now. I call her Irma Squirma, coz she is the fastest, wiggliest squirrel we have ever had.

Thanks, Nancy! Nice to hear from you!
