My boys are 5 1/2 weeks old and weigh in at 120g and 115g. I think the boys may have aspirated at some point before i got the miracle nipple. They are acting normal but they sneeze occasionally. I have bactrim on hand and no other antibiotic. I was wondering if someone could help me with the dosage. I would like to get them started asap to make sure they do not have or get pneumonia. They are esbilac with probiotics and are eating 6 to 8 cc every 4-5 hours. They are urinating and deficating regularly and their poo looks normal. I have their home half on heating pad and half off. They are active within a few minutes of waking up. The heavier one seems to take a small breaks when eating but still consumes the 8cc.

What makes you think they "may" have aspirated?
What size syringe are you using, and what are you feeding?

If they are acting normal I personally would hate to rush to antibiotics.
They would need a strength/mg of the Bactrim to dose your squirrels.

The bigger one pulls the nipple out of his mouth several times while eating and some gets in his nose when he yanks away. When i first got them i was using a 1cc syringe and now with the nipple i am using a 3cc syringe. They are eating esbilac with probiotics until my fox valley comes in tomorrow. There is no strength on the bottle it says ic sulfamethoxazole-tmp ds tablet take one tab by mouth every 12 hours. No mg listed.

What other signs of pneumonia should i look for as i continue to care for these little ones? Should i have the dosage on hand in case it arises?

Thankyou for being proactive. Signs I go by is loss of appetite, fussy with eating, lethargy, and a click with each breath. Not all symptoms have to be present and you have to be careful, cos a baby that is about to break out with diarrhea will exhibit everything except the click.

No one can dose the med that you have without a strength. SMz is slow acting, better than nothing, but start looking for Baytril/Cipro or Clavamox/augmentin, animal version/human version.

I looked up the dose for this tablet it is 800mg of sulfamethoxazole and 160mg of trimethoprim. They have not slacked in eating at all they have actually been going up in cc's. They both sneeze occasionally. They still sleep alot but when they awake for eating they will play just for a few minutes and then go to sleep during a feeding. I havent done this for 2 years and i wanna make sure i am doing everything possible to care for them. Having 2 is alot harder than having one.

I found some dosage instructions that say to cut the pill in quarters and dissolve in 5ml of water. The squirrel should receive .01ml for every 25 grams weight. Should be given twice daily for ten days. Is this correct?

If they were mine I would not dose yet. I am not seeing signs of AP and I feel that I tx sooner than most. The most important thing is to have the correct med on hand that's why I mentioned the other meds.

Thank You. I will be on the look out for those med and the symptoms in my boys. I appreciate your response and makes me feel more at ease. I have one more question though. Are the weights on my boys good for their age?

At 5 1/2 weeks, I think the weights are great on your little ones! :w00t
You're doing wonderful!

Hi Amy, it is hard to say if a wt is good for a certain age because the babies come in from all different circumstances. What would help us more is to get some good up to date pictures to see the condition of your babies. Another thing that would be helpful is to see a week of wt gains. So if you keep track (great idea to do this) of their wts we can get an idea if that is on par for this age.

Ok, start from now. Weigh each morning before first feeding. Weigh every day. Can't remember what you are feeding. It really helps to keep all posts in one thread so that when someone comes to help they can get background help.

Again a picture would really help assess your sweet babies.:grouphug

Ok so the boys have been gaining great. As of yesterday, Yoda weighted in at 137 and Vader at 146. They have been eating between 6cc and 9cc every 5 hours. The past two days the smaller one is eager to start eating but will only eat 4cc. He is running all over the cage and jumping everywhere. I did start them both on Henrys block and the small one (yoda) loves them. Could this be the reason for him not wanting much milk? Im scared i am missing something.
