I'm slightly concerned for my 4-5 week old gray squirrel. He currently weighs 78 g. Back story is I received two squirrels bc some guy cut a tree down without looking to see if there was a nest. The male came to me injured. His toe on his right hind leg was snapped off and just hanging by skin. I took him to the vet and he snipped the toe off and gave him some antibiotics just to err on the side of caution. He's been on clavamox for two days now for his foot. It's a 14 day prescription. Just tonight while he was eating he got sucking too fast and I didn't catch it and some formula came out of his nose. Now when he breathes it continually is clicking. He is eating well and not lethargic. My question out of all that information is, will the clavamox work for AP if he has it or maybe delvolp it? Thank you in advance for any information you can provide.

Yes Clavamox is one of the drugs we suggest for aspiration pneumonia.
What sized syringe are you using, and are you using a nipple?
Also what formula are you feeding, how often and how much?
Is this your first little squirrel?
There is a slew of bad information out there, so I just want to make
sure your little one is getting the best possible advice.

Thank you for the quick response. I ordered the baby b kit from Henry's health pets so I'm using the 3 ML syringes and 1 ML syringes. I'm using the silicone mothering nipples also from HHP. Currently I'm using a 50/50 mixture of esbilac and fox valley 20/50. I am feeding him every 3-4 hours and usually about 5%. I bought a gram scale so I could keep track and make sure everything was accurate. Yes this is my first baby squirrel and I'm trying my best to do everything I can so they thrive. The squirrel in question also has a sister who is flourishing but he def had a rough go of it but is still it good spirits. I'm just trying to make sure the dosing instructions for the clavamox is what you guys would recommend. He doesn't work on wild animals (only because the DNR will fine him heavily) but he is a true animal lover and is willing to help me out as much as he can.

Sounds great.:w00t
I think I would use the 1 cc syringe for a while longer.
They are easier to control.
I preload my syringes, and put the nipple on.
Then I put them in a glass with really hot water to keep them
warm. This way the little one doesn't get impatient when I have
to switch out the syringe. Just make sure the formula isn't too hot.
Sometimes if the water is hot, I will take out a syringe and set it aside
and cool it a little before offering it, WHILE he is still sucking on one.
The Esbilac is the powdered kind correct?
You're lucky that you have a vet that will help.
What was the dosing instructions for the Clavamox, we can double check the amount if you want.
What is the strength/ml of the suspension?

Yes I think that's what I'll do for the time being, they just get so impatient. Yes it is the powdered with pro and probiotics in it. Should I be giving him an additional probiotic since he's on an antibiotic? Or will the ones that are in the esbilac be fine?
I'm going to insert a photo of the clavamox label right from the vet.

I took out the personal information.
If this is 62.5 mg/ml which I think it is, then
0.02 if just a tad low for a squirrel weighing 78 grams,
but it's fine.:w00t
Do you have a syringe that will measure 0.02?

Thank you I didn't even think of the personal information. My mind is a little frazzled. The smallest syringe I have is a 1 ML syringe. I have been giving him 1 drop. Do they make syringes that small?

Your 1 mL syringe should have the marks like the one in this photo.
I put a red arrow where the dose should be. I do think that amounts to a drop or two.
I know you're frazzled, these little ones do that to us no matter how long we've been doing it. :)
