Hi,
I've noticed my 4 1/2 month old eastern gray has very bad smelling urine and feces... and his bottom is starting to smell too. I can only describe it as smelling like 'skunk spray'. He cleans himself all the time, but still smells.

About a month ago, he had trauma due to a robin attack and a few days later, he had bloody urine which cleared up after I fed him cranberries for a week. I'm worried maybe it was an infection that never cleared up... but his urine is not bloody now... and his feces has the same kind of smell.

He doesn't eat as much as his brother, but when he does, he eats fruits, vegetables, rat block regularly and has a few nuts and seeds as treats, mostly almonds, sesame seeds, acorns, butternuts, hickory nuts, and the odd peanut. I make squirrel cookies which he loves - with peanut butter, seeds, flour, and extra liquid calcium. He also eats red maple leaves and maple keys, lilacs seeds, baby pine cones...

Could it be his diet... or a result of the bloody urine incident?

Please help. I'm getting worried.

Hi and :Welcome to TSB. I don't see anything in his diet except maybe the acorns that might cause any odor. Mostly acorns cause urine to turn a harmless but scary red color. This could be a UTI. Yes, this could be a UTI that didn't get completely cleared up. Is he able to urinate? Does his bottom stay dry or wet?

If this is a UTI then he will need to be treated with an antibiotic. You will need either Baytril or Clavamox (animal drug) or Cipro/ Augmentin (often prescribed for humans with UTI). Any of these drugs will work for UTI. You need only 1 pill. We can dose it for you and tell you how to mix it.

Hi and thanks for replying. I would say he is urinating normally... although he has a strange habit of 'dribbling' on me every time I come into the room to feed him (which was going to be the topic of my next posted question lol). I checked his urine last evening and there wasn't any smell... but the strong odour was back again this morning. This leads me to believe it is coming from his feces. He's had several loose bowel movements lately and the smell became very noticeable afterwards.

I live in Canada so I cannot get any type of antibiotic unless its prescribed by a vet. There aren't any vets nearby who care for wildlife. The nearest Rehab Centre told me that if I brought him there, I wouldn't be allowed to take him home again.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I really don't know what to do.

I'm not sure if others will agree, but I wonder if this could be coccidia or just smelly loose bowels? Was there a change in diet that could be associated with loose bowels? Coccidia requires a special anti-parasitic medication (Panacur) that can be purchased online at www.jefferspet.com.

Call around to family and friends and see if anyone has leftover antibiotics. You only need one pill. You're looking for Baytril (animal)/ Ciproflaxin (human) or Clavamox (animal)/ Augmentin (human) or SMZ-TMP (a sulfa drug). If you can't locate anything I can send you some Baytril, it will just take awhile to get there.

Thank you very much. I will ask around to my friends and family and get back to you about the meds.

It is very frustrating living in Canada sometimes. I take my dog and cat to a vet in the US. Very thorough doctors and priced so people can afford to have pets.
