So Too-ee, a wild guy, bit me yesterday. :hurt :Cry My fault....was hand feeding him a pecan that was a small piece & he chomped down on my finger on what he thought was nut! :eek He didnt want to let go, so I gently picked him up still attached to my finger & whispered until he let go. No fighting, no wigglin or scratching. Im actually surprised he let me pick him up. Gently put him back down & gave him the nut. Pretty good cut on my finger now...had to butterfly it b/c where its at wants to keep splitting open when I move my finger. Using antibiotic ointment & keeping bandage on it. Mildly hurts today b/c of the location. Im not concerned at all....hubby is. I know Ive had a tetanus shot in last 10 years (when Im not sure of). Im a fast healer. Hubby was ready to go to ER :tap.

Too-ee is about a year old & one of 3 that I've fed since he & his brother were babies (mom started bringing them over to me at 14 weeks for food & they have never been afraid of me since mom said it was ok). So I see him everyday - 2 or 3 times a day, comes in the garage, comes when called, etc. So i know him. He's totally healthy & good looking.

Anything to worry about? Im thinking not. :thinking

Sounds like you are on top of it. Just watch it, keep it clean with antibiotic ointment. A friend did get a hospital stay for an infected squirrel bite, but she is not the type to take care of it.

You might need antibiotics. Augmentin is the drug of choice. I got bit on a finger joint and it did get infected. Even if it doesn't get infected Augmentin (Clavamox) is always good to have around. <wink wink> :grin2

Make sure you are current on your tetanus booster! This goes for any type of puncture injury and squirrel bite falls in this category.

Typically, you want to hold the injury under warm, running water for several minutes. Try to keep the blood flowing out out as much as possible which will help to flush out any contaminant or infectious agent. Dry, apply neosporin and a clean bandaid. I have been bitten a few times and never had an infection but keep an eye on it. If it starts to get reddish, painful or there is discharge and swelling then an oral antibiotic is needed.

Love hurts, love scars, love wounds
And marks, any heart
Not tough or strong enough
To take a lot of pain, take a lot of pain
Love is like a cloud
Holds a lot of rain
Love hurts......ooh, ooh love hurts

Stosh: Yes you are dating yourself with that Nazareth song, but hey, I have it too on my car's CD player. Great art is forever!

About the bites of squirrels: my Trooper has bitten me in excess of 100 times, I lost count now: bites of anger, confusion frustration, madness, you name it. Some required stiches at the local ER, other he even bit me a second time on the same wound. An I am his chosen human!!! Go figure. But no matter how many times he has bitten me, I still love him like the first day he fell into my heart from his native tall tree and never let go.

What is strange about his biting, is that I've never had any one of them infected. Ever! So I either have a super strong Kryptonite constitution, or the stories that I read about the yellow coating on squirrels teeth, is actually a natural "antibiotic" that protects their incisors while they gnaw and grow(as they encounter the world they live at the rate of six inches growth per year).

Is it possible that if their mouth are clan and free from dirt, his bite is actually protecting me?

REgards,

Trooper's dad

LOL you guys are silly! Great song Stosh...now I'll have an earworm the rest of the night! :grin3 Yes, love hurt in this case! But I still love Too-ee! :Love_Icon He's my kooky boy! Not quite wrapped too tight that one. I still cant get over how he let me pick him up still attached! He's a WILD! And he was so calm about it!

Yes, tetnus is up to date. It bled like crazy & was dripping from my hand by the time I got in the house. Washed it really well with antibacterial soap. Using bactroban ointment on it. So check, check & check...should be good to go. Definitely taking good care of it.

No go on augmentin HRT4SQRLS...Im allergic to all cillins so my dr wouldnt prescribe it anyway!

Thanks for the advice all! :blowkiss
