Now while I keep the Squirrel Cafe full and thus have many, MANY squirrels at my house, I don't attempt to tame any of them. I don't hand feed them (though I will certainly toss a treat or two) or do anything to make them friendly enough to possibly approach any of the other people in the neighborhood. I fully enjoy watching them just be squirrels out there while they stuff their faces. They know me and don't usually run from me of course, and they know my purpose on this earth is to shovel more food into their Cafe. They know that if it is empty all they have to do is catch my eye through the window when I am in the kitchen - they loooook in the Cafe, then at me, then the Cafe, and as soon as they see me start out of the kitchen they jump down to meet me at the front door.

So this afternoon I was doing what I do every Sunday afternoon - sitting on my porch swing talking on the phone to my mother, watching the squirrels heading to and from the Cafe. That was when a little girl squirrel boldly walked up and stood right in front of me, and then jumped up onto the swing with me! She flumphed herself down on the cushion no more than six inches from my thigh and pancaked there, chin on paws, as comfortable with me as P is! She stayed there until I got off the phone and a bit longer - probably at least 15 minutes! I talked to her and she would turn her head around and look at me - but only when I was speaking to HER, not my mom... Then she sat up and proceeded to thoroughly groom herself, one time losing her balance and using my leg as a prop! At no time did she try to mooch food; this was just companionship! When she was done she hopped down and went back to the Cafe. My little buddy. The last time a wild animal "chose" me like that it was my sweet little chippy Jack who hopped up on my foot while I was cleaning my garage. I hope we get to chill together again!

Very cool! Animals can tell a lot about people using their incredible senses. That does not mean they will approach you often, they are still wilds. But every once in a while, you get to make a friend! I hope she stops by again to hang out with her new human friend. :great:clap

I love that story!! To hang out for companionship from a wild animal to me, is a huge loving gift. :Love_Icon. I used to have a wild squirrel rustle tree leaf branches when I would walk by, it would then run to a lower branch closer to me, and pancake. It did not want a nut, it just wanted to pancake near me on a branch for 5-10 minutes while we both enjoyed the outdoors together, those moments were priceless and your story brought back those memories.

I just experienced a wildlife encounter of a very strange kind. I feed squirrels on my back porch, I do that because a wild one I had never raised started it last year. It would sit on my back step, and one day I opened the door to come out, and it walked in. So I went with it. So yesterday, I was standing on my back porch, leaning on a table top that holds the small nut jar that I toss or hand nuts to squirrels with. There is a mouse that lives on the back porch, and a few times a week, I will leave sunflower seed gifts for it at night, and find them all gone in the morning. The mouse appeared! Kind of surprised me, and without missing a beat, I kindly said, well hello little mouse, how can I help you tonight? The mouse looked at me, came forward, walked right up to the nut jar that holds the nuts (it was 4 inches from my hands), stood on its hind legs, placed its paws on top of the lid, and looked straight up into my face! Ok, you would like a nut I said, and the mouse ran back into the hole in the wall. I took out a nut, placed it next to the jar, told the mouse I had a nut gift, and within 20 seconds, the mouse came out, took the nut and left. I stood in awe thinking, seriously, did that really happen? That mouse actually communicated to me perfectly what it wanted....

Oh wow such a great story CM! What a wonderful experience that must have been to have a wild squirrel just come to chill with you like that. Animals do have a sense about people on a level we don't understand and it's stories like these that remind me of just how amazing that truly is:Love_Icon - thanks for sharing this special experience with us.:)

Love it.
Those are the best experiences when something from the wild approaches you to interact.

I had a little girl this spring who would climb up on my lap and search my pockets or follow me around the house. Problem is, she had babies, and Diva, the reigning queen caught her in my house, and they had a fight. They whirled around like a yin yang pair right in front of me until I jumped up. Then Diva ran her off, and I haven't seen her since. I hope she's OK, because I am aware that I do not see everything that goes on out there. Meanwhile, Diva has taken up climbing onto my lap. I hope my little girl comes back this fall, but I don't have too much hope as long as Diva is around. I'm so happy for you that you have wild friends. Just be careful you don't find yourself being socialized into the squirrel pack.
